Thread: Problem with Camellia Oil

A few months back I switched from using Dovo sterol oil on my razors to using Camellia oil, what is occurring with the Camellia oil is it appears to be drying out on the razors and leaving some staining at least temporary anyhow, I did not have the Dovo sterol oil ever dry out. Has anyone else had this occur with Camellia oil? I am applying it to the razor typically the next day after a razor has been used wiped dry and left open to completely air dry then again re-wiped/polished before applying it.

I've had a similar experience. When the oil dries, it becomes tacky, and I have to use one of the citrus based cleaners to wipe down the blade prior to use, i.e. Goo Gone...
I only use Camelia oil for blades that are being stored. For razors out in rotation, I used a silicone treated cleaning cloth, like you'd use for guns...Works great...

Ive had exactly the opposite experience as Zib. Camelia oil on daily shavers applied straight after drying razor with toilet paper seems to be ok. Camelia oil on stored razors seems to dry out over time.

Over the weekend I honed up 7 razors that had not been in rotation for a while and found that at least some of these had dried out, while others had not.


My razors are stored in a closet inside old cigar boxes, however it does get quite warm in there on hot days (we are just heading into summer now). I had not used these particular razors for a couple of months.


I normally put one drop of oil per side, but next time I am storing anything I am going to increase that a bit (maybe 2 or 3 drops).


Also, I have 2 livi's which seemed to fare the worst with camelia oil - the oil had completely dried and gone sticky, however I was left with staining all over the blades. A bit of autosol (I think you guys call is maas) got rid of it within a few seconds and they cleaned up great, but it looked pretty bad to start with. I put this down to the type of steel used in these razors and their final finishing. None of my other razors (which we all in the same box inside their individual coffins) had this issue so I cant see how it would have been caused by my storage technique.


Not sure if any of that helps or reassures you, but thats been my experience with Camelia oil over the past 12 months or so.

Yah +1... The only time I trust camellia oil for storage is on katana that never see water & are in an airtight scabbard. I find it fine for daily replacement .

+1 to that, My Katana hold up fine with Camelia oil, like you said, must be the scabbard.
