    Exclamation Adiction

    Howdy all,

Ive been a member on here for a little less than a year and must admit i love this website. I love to come on here and read all there is about shaving, but also learn a lot of new things about cigars/pipes, coffee, clothing style and anything else under the sun we talk about on here.

One thing that i have noticed which is starting to concern me is the addiction a lot of people seem to be getting towards shaving.

Now dont get me wrong a nice shave and some great equipment is never a bad thing, what concerns me is the people you see buying 6 or 7 razors at a time. Or the stones or brushes everyone wants more and more of.

I'm not here to complain or nag on anyone, I'm just saying sometimes you see it getting out of control and you start to feel concerned about some people.

I understand that it is a new hobby and you want to try out every product and have the latest thing, but sometimes you have to learn how to draw the line. Frankly i haven't seen some people learn how stop.

Now i bet your saying its just shaving whats the problem? Or its just one more strop/stone/brush/soap whats the problem? But lets try to think of it in terms of something like booze, or drugs. Would it be ok to have just one more? or 7 or 8 more?

I know I'm probably writing things that no one wants to read but i feel like someone should say it. We can still enjoy or hobby but learn how to draw the line.

Now go out there and have a great shave!

Some want to collect and some just want to shave and many of us are somewhere between. It is about you and your personal views how to get all this.

I had temporary RAD for some time ago with almost 30 razors within 2-3 years. Little by little i realized that i will never learn to know that amount of different blades so well, so lately i've been selling some of my razors. Currently i have about 15 and my aim is to drop it until i have nice 7-day set. The problem is what to sell and what to keep as they are all good shavers.
Luckily i never had HAD. Well i have several hones but only one for each grit. I had most of them before straight razors as i've always liked to hone my knives and tools by hand.

Acquisition disorders usually calm down after the initial spree. So long as someone is within their means, I don't see a real problem for most. The few that cannot control themselves usually have other life issues beyond the shaving world.

I do agree with you, where do you draw the line. I wanted to start collecting and shaving and jumped in with both feet. Now am weening myself and only going after curtain razors (Unless I'm at the fleaMarket and there is a deal I can't pass up). Now I look at it *Need and Want*. With that said I still need a sweet FW Engles.

As long as you are a grown-up and have control of your economy I don't see a problem.

    It isn't like buying drugs.

I'm so glad I don't have to answer for my spending to anyone but myself.

The difference with alcohol and drugs is that is hazardous to your health. Shaving usually isn't. That being said you have to control yourself within your means. For me straight shaving is like an avid hobby. How many people spend tons of money on coin collections or stamp collections or whatever their own hobby is. I spend money on razors and shaving accessories. The key is just to keep in mind how much you are spending. If you make millions of dollars a year you can afford to buy new razors every day. For me I tend to aquire something new (razor, brush, strop, etc.) every couple of months, sometimes a little more frequently. I think it's only a problem if it is causing you financial stress in other areas.

I think this is the essence of it.

I have been buying my fair share of shaving gear this last year or so, but I can definitely see me slowing down considerably.

In addition, most of what we buy in this hobby, can be sold to other shave enthusiasts if the need should arise to free up some capital.

For me, the different AD's has slowly turned into a desire to further hone my skills and techniques in both honing and shaving.

Sure, I'll admit that I have invested a "bit" in my hobby, but what hobby doesn't cost? Some call it an addiction while others call it a collection. Cool thing though, if you have been smart with your purchases you can get most if not more of your $ back if you decide to cash out. Other than firearms, what hobbies can you say that about?
