Yeah, that's right, like nessmuck wrote, you'll get warm rather than hot lather. You can also warm the scuttle and water in a micro and actually get it rather hot, but then it's a question to not get the lather damaged by to hot treatment.
Nice links jdto! I think my brush scuttle is one of those Moss scuttles, nice and heavy construction for sure, even though my handle has been repaired once.

I have a Dirtybird scuttle (the extra large double...it's not on the site anymore, but if you ask for it she will make it for you). I use an electric kettle to heat my water prior to pouring it in. I've also found that putting a silicone pad underneath the bottom of the scuttle helps keep it hotter longer. No matter what you choose, I think you'll enjoy it.

I'm taking the plunge! I'm ordering today the 1.5 scuttle from Dirty Bird and three of her shaving mugs. So far, I always make lather in a bowl so I don't think I'll pick up the brush scuttle...though it's pretty cool too.

Yes, Julie on her site (www.dirtybirdpottery.com) mentions this, too, how too hot of a lather will kill it. By the way, don't go to dirtybird.com if you're interested in pottery.
I'd have to agree. Very nice pictures.
A very nice tip regarding the silicon pad, thank you. I've already purchased a tea kettle at Target specifically for my scuttle, and as a way of heating up a towel. The bathroom sink is a ways from the hot water heater and we have a solid slab, so the water gets very cold unless it's on full blast (stupid builder, I told her to insulate those lines).
Now you tell me about the extra large double . I would have probably ordered that, instead. I wonder why she took it off her site.
I ordered the 1.5, too. She mailed it the other day. I'm very excited.
Yeah, when I ordered it she was going on vacation, so it was longer than four weeks. Like I mention above, she just mailed it. I am hoping it arrives tomorrow.

I bought 2 vintage ones but was not really happy with either. While nice to look at they had 2 draw backs: 1 not microwave safe. You couldn't heat your water right in them; 2 the lathering bowls were not deep enough.
I've made my own out of a large corning wear like coffee mug with a matching ramekin. The rims of the ramekin and mug fit together and it works for me.
