Thread: Georgetown G20

Ok, so I used the G20 this morning. I filled the reservoir and the bowl with hot tap water, as hot as it gets, which isn't the hottest. Showered, then started to prep the cream. I used Santa Maria Novella Creme da Barba. I poured the water out of the bowl, put a dollop of cream (about the size of 3 dimes), a few drops of hot water, and started mixing, adding more drops of water as needed. it made a good lather really easily (much easier than mixing it on my cupped palm). When I put the lathered brush to my face, it still felt quite warm -- and that's just with tap water. Water from a kettle should keep it even hotter. This thing works exactly the way it's supposed to. Get one soon.
Cheers,
Jack

Hey guys, I love the look of the georgetown g5, especially the glaze used on their main g5 page, the picture with the brush and safety razor.
But I happen to know a master potter who works out of a pottery studio a block away from where I work, and I figure, hey, why not support local artists and save on shipping costs, right.
Turns out this guy shaves with a straight and brush too, he's a great old gent, he was really excited about the project when I asked him about it. He said he wanted to make one for himself too. I went over the day after I asked him about it to see the studio, and he threw the thing on the wheel right there in front of me, it took him all of two minutes. It had to dry for a while before he could fit the handle on it and combine the reservoir with the bowl, and the studio is only open two days a week, so he told me to come back in a week and check it out again then. I returned, and he wasn't in, but I found the scuttle and snapped a pic of it with my iphone.
I gathered from some other potters in the studio that the kiln was out of order (hence his absence) and it would be another week before the thing would be back up and running. I came in the next week, and apparently the guy who came to fix the kiln broke something else on it, and it would be another week. So I got an email yesterday that the kiln is back online, and my friend has invited me to observe him glaze the scuttle. It's taken a bit longer than I had hoped, but hey, it's about the process anyway, absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that.
So he'll be glazing the scuttle tonight, firing it, and I should be shaving with it next week. I'm pumped, I can't wait to see how well it works. I'll keep you posted. If there are any refinements I want in the design, I'll just have him make me another one, which is great. I might even have him make them for all of my buddies as birthday gifts this year. If the scuttle turns out to be really good, and if any of you are interested, I would be happy to mention to him the possibility that there may be a forum full of gentlemen interested in having custom scuttles commissioned. Let me also just say that the price he's asking me for this piece is less than anyone else I've found online is charging, and you couldn't meet a nicer fellow. I think I might try to take his pottery class.
At any rate, more later.

Here's a shot of the scuttle with the glaze freshly applied.
Interestingly enough, that darkish pink/red on the top is a blue glaze, and the lighter pink along the bottom is a brilliant red glaze. The liquids change colors pretty drastically when they are fired, apparently the look of it pre-kiln is nothing like the end result. I went with the blue on top instead of orange, I'm thinking it will look pretty good, we'll just have to see. I spoke to the potter about making some more of these, and he said he would love to, so if you would like to get in touch with him about having a scuttle made, just shoot me a pm and I'll pass along his information. I'll probably start a thread featuring the finished scuttle and the potter's contact information, once I've had a chance to use it a few times.
The glaze will be fired either thursday or saturday, so next week I'll have the finished product! I'll update you then.

Well I went out to the shop Tuesday and got a chance to look at the finished scuttle, but the potter wasn't in, so I decided to wait until he's back before I take it, I'd like to pay him before I walk out the door with it. At any rate, it looks great. I'll post more pictures when I get it home.
The glaze turned out pretty cool. I like it a lot.
