Thread: Blade oiling... ?

Hi gents. Can anyone give me their 2 cents on blade oil? What's good to use and how you do it? (is it just "wipe it on then wipe off the excess?"). I heard getting it on the scales is bad, bad, bad. Is oiling even necessary over a couple days of non-shaving? What about a week or two? Thanks for the help.

Many members use different techniques to maintain their blades. Use the "Library" link above to learn a lot about blade maintenance. Also the "Advance Search" link, above right , with key words like mineral oil , blade maintenance will give you many answers.

I just use Lansky honing oil applied with a Q-tip of cotton ball. You could use baby oil instead and that is readily available from supermarkets and such. There are all sorts of other oils you could use,and all would be fairly much equal. Any oil on the scales (usually gets there when I put a drop near the hinge) is wiped off with a tissue. I've also not bothered with oiling the blade of the current razor in use, just ensuring it was dry, but I've since stopped doing that after I ended up with some micro-pitting on a razor that was treated that way more often than the rest. All blades now recieve a usual drying and followed by a wipe of oil. Others will have different methods and Hilau has given good advice on doing your own research in the matter. Find what works for you.

I use Renaissance Wax or usually nothing at all. If you dry the blade properly and store the razor in a fairly dry environment, there is no need for anything at all.

I've been using Vaseline jelly for awhile now on my razors. I apply a little to my Palm and apply it by Palm stropping. Only goes on the blade and it's 'cool'.

I have been using Sentry Solutions TufGlide for a couple of years now with complete satisfaction It is a dry-film preservative, so is not messy to use, and doesn't need to be removed before stropping shaving.

Regular mineral oil sold for laxative use in pharmacies (usually right next to alcohol/peroxide) for any blade that I will leave for 2+ weeks.

I use balistol works great.

Could also be the reason you have a two headed dog...I'd be a bit concerned...
