Thanked: 8These are stones from the Viking years so i dont think they have been used for straight razors since they were used for swords and similar things. For more than 1000 years Eidsborg was the place for getting sandrocks to sharpen swords, axes, knives, farmers tools etc. The rock called "Brynestein" was famous outside Norway because of its usefulle sharpening methods. it has a rough/course part and a finer part for finishing knives etc. The last of the hard stones taken out was done in late 1940's, and last stone shipment to be shipped out was done in 1952 and has the mark/stamp of a "woodpecker sharpening the beak".

Thanked: 0Hvis noen ønsker å se et slikt skjerp, så anbefaler jeg turen Lårdalsstigen som går fra Dalen til Lårdal. Nydelig natur og masse historie som gamle husmannsplasser og slikt. Gått den selv to ganger. Neste gang skal jeg se etter stein.

I guess the only way to get a hold of any of these would be to go on a trek to the mine itself.
The surrounding area is littered with stones, so finding one would be very easy once there
I am planning a trek up there this summer, if time allows it, and will for sure grab a few for myself!
As for grit rating, it is not a finisher by any means.
What it was mainly used for was knives, shears, swords and other tools around the farm/household.
Here's a video of the history of these stones, and the place where they where mined.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 2Synd. Det hade varit roligt att ha en till köksknivarna.
Nåja, det blir kanske en resa till Norge någon gång.
