Thread: Hard Root Beer

I bought a six pack of the stuff about a week ago. I was floored how much this stuff actually tastes like root beer. In fact this brew is on the high side alcohol wise for a beer but it is masked by a good deal of sweetness.
Supposedly this beer is made using traditional brewing techniques. As an amateur brewer myself I'm still trying to figure our how they retain so much residual sweetness to the brew. evidently fermentation has been stopped and kept at bay by some clever chemistry. But I like it very much quite tasty. Don't let your kids get into this stuff it will get them hammered. Nice drink enjoy.

Sounds good. I will look for it. Brings to mind 'root beer floats' we did as a younger, partying sorts.
Mug of cold beer, drop a glass jigger of root beer schnaaps in, chug the whole thing.

New Years Eve, 1957. San Francisco, 10pm, down and dirty bar, myself and a fellow grad student on our way back to Oregon from Los Angeles. Toasted the New Year with Boilermakers - glass of beer with a shot of port in it. High time had by all. Dragged to 6am Mass (very, very devout Catholic friend) cause he felt the need to atone for the previous evening. Never said a more heart felt "Amen" in my life when silence arrived at the end of the Mass. Every sound and movement intensified. Took the coast route back to Oregon, everything closed, lunched on a couple of cans of smoked Oysters. Slept for 17 hours after getting back.

I went on to become the Alte Kocker that I am today. He quit grad school and joined a silent order of Monks.

Well after reading this thread I was intrigued by this new creation. I took a ride to my local beer distributor and picked up a case of Coney Island, and while I was checking out I had a mini stroke when the clerk punched out $46 clams on the register. After choking on my tongue I dropped the cash and left with the case.
I got to say that this stuff is real good. $46 dollar good???? hmmmmmmmm
But the idea from previous posters of making a float will definitely have to be tried.

Back in '61 when I was in second grade my family moved the 35 miles from our hometown of Pomeroy to Dayton WA. There was a little Drive Inn that was located in a re-purposed gas station from way back in the day. It was called 'The Mug Up'. Their specialty drink was a 'Mug Up' and what they did was take a root-beer mug and put about an inch of soft ice cream in the bottom then place them in a freezer until the ice cream was solid. When you went in and ordered the mug up with the soda pop of your choice the frozen mug was pulled out and filled with the pop. Once you had drank the liquid there was a delicious crystallized concoction at the bottom that was eaten with a long handled spoon.

GOD Damn were they good! I make them once in awhile especially when the grand kids are here!

I don't know how they would work with an alcoholic root beer but it might be worth the trouble. It might help compensate for the $40+ that you had to cough up

My friend,
When you let me know when you'll be rolling in on that thunder that you ride, I'll be sure to pick some up and I'll have some with you.

That's the only way I can justify spending that kind of money on something 'experimental'. I'm not 'Cheap' but I'm definitely 'Frugal' I guess it comes from my heritage; English, Irish, Welsh and Scot!

I found the Coney Island at Disney Hollywood Studios and they stick the dads at my local. I prefer the Coney Island root beer Little to much spice taste in the dads.

A lot of home brewers making it down here. Is very nice, but yeah you gotta be careful, easy to drink. Usually about 8%.

I bought this for SWMBO this weekend. Really good flavor, the only detractor was that alcohol taste at the end was "different". This comes from a Southern California craft brewery so I am unsure of nationwide availability. My first thought on this was how good a root beer float made of it would be!
