Thanked: 0Just finished off the bottle of Laphroaig QC that I had poured into the carafe to make the bottle into a lamp for a friend!
Still some Ardbeg 10 and Caol Ila to go through. Will replace the Laphroaig and add some Lagavulin and probably Ardbeg's Uigeadail when we do a border run next.
Something that is seriously worth a poke is a non-Scotch from my old stamping ground of Ireland. Connemara peated single malt. Which is bizarre, as most Irish whiskeys are triple distilled and unpeated. This is basically a made-in-Ireland scotch - it is double distilled and peated. Think Caol Ila with a little more smoke.
Connemara is also a stunning place. I lived in east Galway, but ventured into the wild many times. Nothing quite like that here.Last edited by VA2GXB; 01-05-2013 at 03:14 AM.

Thanked: 25Recommend me a Scotch?! lol
I've drank Scotch once before when I was younger at a very nice upscale hotel lounge in Austin, but I cant remember the name of the brand. I want to say it began with a "D", but the bottle didnt look like a Dewar's bottle so Im not sure. I would like to get into something with a bit more refined flavor. I typically drink Jameson whisky, and thats really all I drink. Im not a beer fan and I hate the flavor of stuff like Jack Daniels. I've heard Glenlivet is a good brand to get started on, but I figured I would turn to the sophisticates here to see what you would recommend. I would like to find something good in the same ball park price range as Jameson if at all possible.

Re: Scotch/whiskey of the day
Try the Yamazaki 12. I'd start with any of the nicer Speyside single malts honestly. I like the flavor of the Yamazaki and the price is nice too.
Now I know it's technically not a scotch, and not a Speyside, but it still is. If you taste tested it blindfolded you wouldn't know the difference, and they import their grain and peat from Scotland and use high mountain water, same as any Speyside. When the Dude is recognized in the world, unDudeness will be seen everywhere--- the Dude de Ching

A decently stocked liquor store should carry it. I'm not sure what city you're in, but there are probably ten different liquor stores within ten miles of me that carry it. So it's not like it's rare, you know.

The tricky thing will be to find a single malt in that price range. There are a lot of cheaper whiskys out there that are responsible for a lot of people having decided they don't like whiskey. Things like Teachers, Bells, Famous Grouse come to mind.
So far the lowest-priced single malt that I have found up here in Ottawa is "The Singleton of Glendullan". It retails for about $50 here, or a little over half of what a bottle of a'Bunadh would set me back. It's a Speyside (I'd agree with Maddafinga's suggestion of starting with a Speyside) single-malt, and while not as good or complex as its more expensive neighbours, it's pretty darn good.
There are plenty of places online that give reviews of whiskey, this is just one:

Happy hunting, and whatever you try - enjoy!

Wow Cangooner, I can get a'bunadh for sixty bucks here, and the Aberlour 16 for about the same. The Yamazaki 12 and the glenrothes 12 are both about $35.
I'm going to get a bottle of the Yamazaki 18 next weekend, a bit more expensive at 90.When the Dude is recognized in the world, unDudeness will be seen everywhere--- the Dude de Ching

Yeah, I know. That's why I spent part of my vacation back in Oct driving around from liquor store to liquor store in upstate NY looking for a'bunadh. *No one* had it and I hadn't thought to order it in in advance! Grr. Lesson learned...
But here's the sad truth about whisky prices in Ontario:
