Thanked: 1587You need to lightly score the skin in both directions, and then rub in liberal amounts of aftershave.
Just like roast pork!

lol! You know - I bet you are on to something. That or you have skin like leather lol. Just joking, just joking .
Fact of the matter is, after a while I think ones face gets rather used to a straight shave. Just the other day I forgot to put aftershave on at all. When I remembered, I shrugged it off and didn't put any on that day at all. My face didn't fall off and I wasn't at all uncomfortable.
I doubt that would be the same though were I to not otherwise do it every time I shaved. Especially in winter when my skin drys up on me .David

I guess after you shave, your skin has been cleared of some of the dead cells exposing a fresher layer or at least less distance to a fresher layer. Healing begins immediately so the longer you wait the less effect it has. it's kind of like getting a cut and waiting until after a scab forms to put antibiotic cream on as opposed to putting some on right away.
Like I said, just a guess. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 1195Since this old story comes from the days when barbers believed in the myth that pores open and close I'm willing to bet that this belief is based on such. I don't put much faith in it.
On average I'd say my aftershave/conditioner is applied well after the magical 3 minute mark, and I get zero ill effects after shaving. This is after several years of shaving experimentation trying to find the process that gives me the greatest benefit. So IMHO I'm saying it's false.

Well I altered my typical shaving routine today so I could ‘play’ with seeing if I could notice any difference from applying aftershave earlier than I normally do!
My normal routine is to leave my face alone and take care of my razor 1st! I always wash the blade with liquid dish soap, then rinse and towel dry then use a blow dryer on low heat and high air volume to make sure that it’s fully dry and then I apply Ballistol and put the razor away. THEN I take care of my face! I cold water rinse, then pat dry and apply my favorite splash on some vintage Brut 33.
Today I finished shaving and quickly rinsed and patted my face dry and applied the Brut.
Personally I couldn’t tell any difference! ‘Perhaps and just Perhaps’ the pleasant stinging lasted just a little bit longer but I wouldn’t swear to it!!
Tomorrow back to the usual routine!
