You run more risk with day-to-day interaction in your current environment, than you do from a hidden risk in the razor's pivot area. JMO

On the other hand John.I am nervous,VERY nervous,am beside myself actually. You see I use only tallow based soaps.Tho I never get the tang or pivot wet, should lather get into the pivot area I am wondering if it would grow into creutzfeldt-Jacob (AKA, mad cow Disease).
This needs furthur researce for sure IMO,we as wet shavers need to be very carefull with our pivot areas JMO

I would like the ability to disassemble and clean occasionally the pivot area as well. I've learned that no matter how careful you are and how well you clean and oil your razor that gunk will find its way into the pivot area. There are many people who probably don't notice. Just take a clean white cloth and carefully 'floss' it a bit in your pivot area on any given razor and you will discover what I'm talking about. You notice this the most with white scales. Perhaps my black scales are unaffected, lol. I think the whole thing about pins are that they are traditional and also cheap. It is possible to re-pin but it is a hassle to do- even if you are well practiced and re-pinning is not meant to do on any type of regular basis. I like the progress of design that company's like Hart have introduced. Perhaps someone offers a service to rebuild a razor built with pins with a torx setup? That would be interesting.

As far as clean enough to shave I think disassembly after every shave would be equivalent to rebuilding your car engine after every drive. What really needs to be clean is the edge, which rinsing and stropping will do well. But I definitely understand your thoughts behind this. I also agree that you could dramatically increase your chances of damaging the fine razor edge if taking the whole thing apart on a frequent basis. Remember that the scales are there to protect the razor primarily.

Seems like if it was a problem, about half of us would be dead by now. Taking it apart every time would be a big hassle. If it gets to bad, I use a piece of twine (the rough stuff) and I can get those areas pretty clean.

It is hard to understand if you are not afflicted. It is even hard to understand if you live with somebody that has some form or another of OCD.

    Glen:

The agent behind Creutzfeldt Jakob's disease (CJD) is resistant to all standard disinfectants. At the hospital, we must incinerate any and all medical supplies or equipment which could be in contact with bodily fluids from a person infected with CJD. That means we would have to throw all of our SRs into a large bonfire if this were to occur.

We must also remember the human skin harbors bacteria such as Staphylococcus and Diphteroids. It would be more productive to perform a 5-10 minute facial before shaving rather than worrying about the pivot of our razors. JM2cts.
