I just pour some in my hand, rub both hands together and then slap the thing on my face. I use cheap CVS stuff, which is what I found around my house. The smell isn't horrible - though it won't win you any dates - and it dissipates rather quickly.

That and the alum block is all the after shave treatment I use. I like to think of it as a minimalistic approach, or even a frugal one.

    My wife calls me cheap.

I use a cotton pad and wipe it on. You can use it anyway you desire, seriously. There's no right or wrong here. You don't have to use it at all. <no sarcasm> I use it to give my face one final cleaning before the after shave balm or after shave lotion. Helps keep my face from getting too oily.

I picked up some witch hazel at the organic food store after I read an article online saying that it helped with acne(for my back). I never thought about using it on my face after I shave until now. I'm going to have to try it out.

For my back I just used a folded paper towel and I have the Thayers with aloe vera

The handmade Witch Hazel distillation I purchase comes in a relatively cheap plastic bottle but has an atomizer top which is good so I just pump it into the palm of my hand and then rub it all over my face and neck repeatedly.

Nowhere near as brutal as Alum block and heals and tones up the skin quite well.

As a beginner my shaves cause a fair amount of redness especially around my chin area and so I use a truck load of this stuff and the Witch Hazel does its job quite well for taking away the redness.

Supposedly the Witch Hazel I purchase is a 100% pure distillation with nothing else added but I am only taking the sellers word for that.

I use the drugstore brand of WH and use a cotton pad to apply it. The benefits I receive from it is that it just cleanses the skin deeper after a cold water rinse. It also tones my skin before I apply the after shave balm and cologne. The aftershaves do not sting when applied after using WH.
