Default What do you guys do for acne?

I have very sensitve skin and am super prone to acne. I'm bad enough that if I eat to much chocolate or even acidic food like tomatoes I break out. Is there any post shave things you guys use that work really well for this? Are there an lotions that do not cause acne?

I have sensetive skin and have rosacea. Since I started using Thayers alcohol free witch hazel post-shave, my skin has never been better. I went from breaking out all the time to breaking out at most once every two months.

I actually use alcohol based AS after the witch hazel dries. The reason I get the alcohol free is so that I'm not using a lot of alcohol products. And aloe is very good for the skin.

My forehead breaks out, or at least did. I started using clearasil scrub in the shower, then Thayers. Haven't had a problem for a while now...

I've heard that alcohol based AS can cause this because it degreases your skin. And this will kick your skin into gear to start producing too much skin grease. I have a sensitive skin as well, and I've found that it really matters which shaving cream / soap you use. Try to figure out which works for you. I use Taylor of Old Bond Street cream.

Btw, isn't acne caused by a microbe / skin virus? I heard that you can get tested, and if your acne is caused by this, you can get treated and get rid of it in a couple of months.

It really depends on the type of acne you are getting. I have pretty bad acne as well. If you are using a good moisturizing shave soap I would say go with a alcohol based AS. Alum blocks really help here too cause they have natural antiseptic properties to kill germs on the skin. Probably the biggest thing to do is rinse rinse rinse and rinse your skin. Having any left over soap on the skin is going to cause breakouts. I have actually switched from shaving after my shower to before recently and this has helped me.

Recently I have been using VDH Deluxe to shave, followed by getting in the shower rinsing my face putting alum on. Then before getting out of the shower rinsing any of the left over alum off. Tend Skin followed by Aqua Velva. If my soap was say Arko I would then use Aveeno Clear Complexion instead of Aqua Velva

One more thing shaving regular with a straight will also help as every time you shave you are exfoliating your skin also. This because with this method you are contently removing dead skin cells unlike with carts and electrics.

Alcohol can dry out the skin, dry skin can thicken and cause clogged pores and acne. Avoid excessive use of alcohol. Wash with gentle cleansers: Noxzema, Cetophil, Oil of Olay, etc.... Use a "Non-comedogenic" moisturizer. Don't over wash--a Dermatologist once told me that you don't need to wash your face more than once a day. I prefer twice a day. Avoid excessively hot water. Be careful with excessive caffeine/alcohol consumption as well. If acne persists, see your GP--a course of Retin-A , Benzoyl peroxide, Doxy, or topical Clindamycin might turn things around.
