Just bought a bottle of Thayers Cucumber Witch Hazel at GNC and was very happy that I found it. Living in Puerto Rico can make it very difficult to find things that I would take for granted in the USA. The cucumber scent is pretty subdued and smells nice. Today I splashed it on after a warm rinse, applying styptic and patting dry. I splashed on plenty to my just-shaved face and neck and had enough left over to wipe across the rest of my face, which I did. No stinging anywhere. I'm new to straight shaving and seem to have less irritation after this shave after applying the witch hazel.

I don't have an alum block yet to compare.

Look here for a good alum block...RazoRock Alum in Case
It does a fantastic job of stopping any weepers and settling down any razor burn.
My usual post shave: Cold rinse/Alum/Cold rinse/Witch Hazel/ASB/AS of the day.

Like most of these guys said, if it works for you, it works. I certainly see no harm in using both. I tried not using both and didn't see much difference, so I cut the alum block out just to save time. But if you like it, go with it.

I have sensitive skin, and when i only used the WH i didnt seem to get as much relief from the occasional redness, as when i use both, plus it feels nice to use both.

Thayer's has some Aloe in it and Witch Hazel has other properties beside the astringent. I use both, the aluminum before cold water, the Thayer's after.

They both feel great, and alum lasts a lifetime. Also works great as a deodorant. But I wouldn't use the same block on your armpits and face!

That is exactly my routine! Works like a charm leaving my face reinvigorated.
