    Default Alum and Thayers......

So I got some Thayers because I had heard so much good stuff about it and to day I had they question of if using both an alum block and Thayers (or whichever WH you may use) is redundant. I usually do a cool water rinse, alum block let it dry while I clean, cold water splash, Thayers, Scent on the Day.

So is the alum block and Thayers redundant?

Maybe, but if it feels nice, who cares?

I use my alum block after a warm rinse, clean up the brush and mug, then follow that with a cold rinse and apply witch hazel. While that is drying I clean up the razor and finish off with my balm then fragrance. I don't know if they do the same thing but I like using both and it doesn't hurt anything either.

I also use both , i think they go well together. I do like the cucumber Thayers very subtle.

    I use both.
Every single day I do a cold water rinse, then Alum that is left to dry.
Another cold rinse followed by a healthy portion of Thayer's medicated super hazel.

    Good stuff

They are both astringents, but hey! If you like it go for both, it isn't going to hurt anything.

    Gentlemen,
Somehow I cannot envision a lovely wet shave without alum and witch hazel. It just doesn't feel natural to me. So this is my routine: tepid water rinse, alum, cold water rinse, Thayer's Super Medicated Witch Hazel with Aloe vera, and aftershave balm. The final splash of Spanish Leather aftershave paints an infectious smile on life.

    No,
I use both every time. Put the alum on a little heavy, allow to dry 7 -8 minutes, then "pat" the face with a cold wet towel, leaving most of the alum still there, then Thayers, dry for five minutes , then aftershave.

I'm in the "both" camp too, and like you I wondered if it was redundant and then decided it didn't really matter. It makes me happy, my face feels good and I see no ill effects.

It may be considered a routine, but for me it goes: warm water rinse, alum, clean scuttle and brush, stop on canvas, put away razor, cold water, CVS Witch Hazel, smile, face the world. Repeat as often as possible.
