Thread: neosporin

After being recomended neosporin for weeepers I did a quick Google on it, the Wikipedia reference says that petroleum jelly is as good in clinical trials, and that there are a few unwanted side effects such as contact dermatitis and increased resistance to other antibiotics, any input would be appreciated.

I find Alum blocks will close up weepers much more effectively and without constantly using antibiotics. Although, I doubt topical antibiotics like Neosporin will really add up to much for your internal defenses... I use the Alum as it is cheaper and more effective! Neo is great for those larger cuts while you are still learning though! I found on the two cuts I received learning that the one I kept Neo on with a band-aid healed about 4 times faster and left no visible scar while the other is still visible... That's my two cents anyway! Have a great day

+1 on alum use - I've had more comfortable skin since I started using it.

In general, the more an antibiotic is used, the more bacteria become resistant to it, and are better able to adapt to other antibiotics in the same family. I don't use antibiotics unless I actually have an infection, which has never happened from a razor nick. The UK's chief medical officer takes antibiotic resistance quite seriously, anyway: story.

I agree on antibiotic use and abuse. Antibiotics have been abused here in the U.S. and it has been proven that the "bugs" have gotten stronger by evolution. I've cut myself a few times over the years, no scars though. A soapy environment is not very friendly to bacteria and the such & straights leave clean cuts...no tearing & even then it's usually only through a few layers of skin.

Alum would be my recommendation as well for weepers and shallow nicks.

I agree, don't use any antibiotic unless you really need one. As you get older you may find yourself really in need of one and if you have abused them you may have real issues down the road. For minor cuts like that you really need nothing. if you're worried about scars, well, they're sexy just ask a pirate. The chicks dig them and you can make up great stories about how you got them. It's a real ice breaker.

When people get a tattoo we advise an antibiotic ointment such as neosporin or bacitracin for the first few days. By then the holes we poked have closed up and the antibiotic is no longer necessary. People who don't pay attention to the instructions, and use the antibiotic ointment for longer periods may end up with dermatitis around the tattoo. I wouldn't recommend it for weepers. When I've gotten them I've used absolutely nothing and never had a problem afterwards.

I use a styptic pencil from clubman for weepers it's available at I believe any local drug store in the shaving section..

I use Alum mostly, then Neo (appling only once), then scar gel...........for some reason, I seem to scar easliy. Probably don't need the Neo, just some red hot steel, and apply, should be fine

I have only had slight weepers in my first year shaving with a straight and only used one of my after shaves with alcohol.
Agree with no neosporin or any other antibiotic ointment or cream for weepers.

Arr me hearty, still love doing pirate impressions, my daughter loves em too, got to dress up for a kids party a while back :-)
