Gentlemen,
I don't use pre-shave oils, because I find them too greasy regardless of how little I use. I prefer Castle Forbes, a cream pre-shave that is water soluble and pampers the skin.
Boarder, I have used the Trumper skin food both as a pre-shave and after-shave and found it far better for after the shave and not all that impressive for before the shave.

I use 2 parts castor oil, one part olive oil, and a few drops sandlewood oil. It's pretty basic but works well for me and I love the smell.

I tried a pre-shave oil when I got started because somebody told me I should. I figured out (on my own) that, after lubing my face with whatever, my hands and half the bathroom was oiled, too. Maybe it smoothed the razor road a little - maybe not.
Now I wash my face, rub in some Proraso preshave and top it with soap/cream microfroth lather."We'll talk, if you like. I'll tell you right out, I am a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk."

Thanked: 8I've alway made my own pre-shave oil. The ingredients in the majority of the retail PSOs are essentially the same (a blend of common and/or 'exotic' oils, vitamin e and fragrance) so creating one's own is quite simple.
Any blend of castor, mineral, olive, jojoba, almond, etc plus whatever scented EO floats yer boat & voila! A custom-made PSO at a fraction of the cost of store bought. I like to use a pump bottle to dispense a small amount each morning.
You can adjust the viscosity by increasing or decreasing the amount of castor oil. AoS pre-shave oils ($25) uses castor oil & olive oil (both inexpensive), plus a fragrance oil. Not rocket science—but obviously it's a fairly lucrative business.

I'm thinking a little glycerin would do the trick.

I haven't used pre shave oils for about 2 years now, found the brand I tried just didn't work that well. Started working with Glycerin and shave cream or soap and learned how to get a good lather going. Now I rarely use the Glycerin, only when I want a nice uber lather. To each their own.

I use snake oil. I get it from this old guy who promised me it will restore my vigor and manliness. I told him I just wanted a good shave he said "yes, yes but of course this will give you the best shave, you don't even need a razor". I said "but I want to use a razor". Then he said, "well it will give you an even better shave with a razor and did I mention restore lost vigor and eyesight?". I said "Well you forgot the eyesight part and I am getting up in the years.....wait no all I want is a pre shave oil that actually works." He said "but of course sir this will alleviate all your ails!". I asked him what was in it and he said that it was a mixture of exotic oils and herbs from South America and the Orient, and all I needed was to drink one teaspoon a day. I said "I don't want a drink...well I do but not from you, I want a pre shave oil that works and you said this was a pre shave oil, don't you put that on your face?" Stumped, he gave me a sample bottle for free and told me to go away and stop hindering his business.
I find if you have a good lather from a quality soap, then pre shave oil just mucks things up. It makes your razor harder to clean off and then you have oil everywhere and oil is hydrophobic and you kinda want your hair to soak up water not repel it.

I like the coral for an after shave balm but as a pre shave oil I don't think it adds value. The only other one I have tried is Floid and it does help but it has a god awful amount of cinnamon or something in it. I have found a good RR soap with a little glycerin is all ya need
