So I've had the G20 for a few weeks now, and I absolutely love this scuttle. My only wish is that every soap and cream could stand up to a very warm scuttle. Unfortunately some soaps just can't handle the heat. Ogallala is one unfortunately that is not very tolerant of a very warm scuttle. So I've learned to not wait to see if a new soap can perform the morning I want to shave with it, but test it out the night before.

I found the same thing with different soaps also. I still use the scuttle ,I face lather and leave the brush with just a few drops of water in the scuttle. It keeps my loaded brush warm but doesn't ruin the soap. Let the community know if that works for you as it may help the community at large.
Warm soap in cold weather is as right as rain in spring.

+1 on the heat with some soaps. I keep a log on them so I know th e next time. If they don't handle a lot of heat, I pass them on. Razorock soaps all seem to be good with heat

I definitely want a scuttle just haven't decided on the style or size. These sure are beautiful. I don't think I have enough counter space for the G-20! What does experience tell this bunch? To get a scuttle that has holes for the water to drain from the soap into the "mug" part or two separate spaces? I'm a sucker for pin up art and have spotted a couple "antique" style scuttles with the holes in the soap dish but I don't know how they compare performance wise? The other thought I had was to make my own. I used to be pretty good on the pottery wheel and one "made by me" sure would personalize it. Plus, I could start making them for gifts.

If you all were getting custom scuttles what features would you need? want?
    thanks,
    G

I find that you have to balance heat retention for warmth and whipping up a lather. If you face lather antique works. Length of shaving time comes into play. When I start to make my routine into a mini series I think its time to question the process. Functional is most important, ridges are nice,
drainage holes have a place if you have one soap.
If you load a different soap scent based on your mood, you just want a whipping station. I would be curious to see your creative side come out.

I have the same scuttle also and was equally pleased with the product and results.....then I felt that times there was too much drama lathering in the scuttle and now use it more for special occasions. Also, I have found myself dedicating several containers (pewter candy bowl, small ceramic shave soap bowl, and sometimes my hand holding a puck) to individual soaps. The scuttle holds MDC Fougere.

Thanks! that will start the gears a movin'. I prefer to build the lather in my mug vs on my face, (probably a bit of both in the morning rush), and love the feeling but I'm with you on "creating a mini series" every time I shave. Those special times when the experience can't be rushed and is really to be enjoyed, when it almost feels like playing...... I digress into the land of retirees.

I have always liked the looks of a one piece scuttle but with the added input it makes me think that a "system" would work better for all the choices we have to deal with as wet shavers. Maybe a base unit with different pieces to; hold soap for face latherers, lather- building bowls for the rest and any other needs. How about stack-able bowls for holding different soaps that would be able to be set in the base unit? This would all be along the lines of being able to add onto it as the individual desires.

    Happy shaving,
    G

When I first started with a straight , I had no scuttle. I looked around the house and found the collection of glass and crystal bells once belonging to my grandmother. I placed it inside a large mug of hot water and used it for months. I still use it on occasion because the handle works well for lathering . I would like to see a potter make a two piece scuttle with such a design. Name: DSCN0226.jpg
