Gentlemen, I agree with the noble Lynn on the scuttle's purpose. I think I have gone through a collection of scuttles, those for lathering and others for keeping the lather warm, and finally concluded that I prefer a scuttle to keep my lather warm. Since I face lather, my Moss and SRD scuttles are ideal for this purpose.

Fuction is to preheat brush in warm/hot water. Secondary function making lather and keeping it warm. Mutiple ways to skin a cat. Some soaps have been reported on to not respond well to high temps. Short answer is find whats right for you. At opposite ends of the spectrum we have.Name: IMG_1972.jpg

Both work, but differently one is a tank, the other is a golden gilded porcelain receptacle. Both hold heat after hot water is added and time passes.
You get to do some R and D on differnt applications.
One costs $73 and the other $12. Cold weather and warm shaving soap good.
Your only as good as your last hone job.

Lynn pretty much nailed it. I have the larger scuttle and it does loose heat but I like it. I heat it up in the micro so it is very hot when I start. By the time I get to my 4th pass it is still warm. I keep it covered with a towel to retain the heat and that helps. Even if I face lather which I do a lot, I rest the brush in it

I still do like my antique scuttles. They're pretty, and much more elegant than the earthenware tub marketed as scuttles.

I'm a girl, sue me I like pretty. But I'm also learning each scuttle and which soap it likes, which brush it likes to give me a hot shave the whole way through. They're finicky, but fun. Doesn't that describe half of the stuff we play with straight razors with?

    Gents:

In my personal opinion I use a Moss scuttle Texan one. Since I start using them I realize that warm lather is the key for an awesome shave. To me, without warm lather is like an empty gas tank in a Ferrari. Very nice to have them.
I love them, actually is part of my regular gear.

    thanks

Just because I own a Y chromosome doesnt mean I dont like pretty and functional. Dont tell so I dont lose my man card , but I have been known to match the scuttle with brush, straight, soap, and aftershave. Call it a themed shave or like a guy " Sunday morning special". I completely get it. You go girl

Absolutely love this set-up. Then it can keep my coffee warm after.

Love to find other people who love their antique scuttles. And they are very much a part of my ritual of shaving. "Sunday Morning Special" sounds just about right, regardless the day or time of day.
