    Default Scuttles

Do shaving scuttles(such as the Moss scuttle) make a difference? I've read that scuttles weren't build with the purpose for creating lather in them.

These things baffle me too. From what I understand the scuttle keeps your lathered brush nice and toasty between passes. If that's the case I wouldn't mind having one myself.

I have a Georgetown G20 scuttle and it's awesome for making lather. Also nice having warm lather so that I can take my time shaving.

There are many types of so call shaving scuttles. Basically the vintage/antique scuttles were not designed to make lather in and modern shaving scuttles are designed to make lather in. The modern shaving scuttles with a void space between inner and outer walls that is filled with hot water should keep the lather warm. Here is some info on scuttles Shaving Mugs And Scuttles - What You Need To Know - Sharpologist . I tried using a scuttle but found it to be a hassle so I went back to face lathering. For me it made no difference.

Dirty Bird makes a small scuttle for face latherers that I like to use.

I like my G20. Brush and lather stay warm throughout the shave. I bowl lather and the ridges are great

In my opinion, the scuttles are all about keeping the lather warm. With a touch of water to act as a conductor in the top bowl, you should get very nice warm lather throughout your shave. Some people do like to lather in the larger scuttles (wider bowls), but I find the larger ones lose heat quicker.

I think I kind of do a 50/50 scuttle/face lather. I make the initial lather in the scuttle to keep it warm, but after applying to my face I often hit the brush with a little more hot water and get the lather even thicker on my face.

My scuttle gets intermittent use. I enjoy it when I do use it and my method is to fill the scuttle with hot water, make about a 1/2 bowl of lather, do all my other prep.....empty the hot water and fill once more then have at it. To me lather that has some time to 'rest' for lack of a better word is preferable to lather right after the first dance in the scuttle with the brush. Sounds kind of weird to me now that I write it out.....
