I definitely agree with the cold water. Works much better for me than warm/hot water or a hot towel.

I first used the white Proraso pre-shave when I first started using a DE, all it seemed to do was clog the razor. It does however work well with a straight razor if I have more than a few days worth of whiskers. I also use it in the summertime because it definitely ups the burr factor when used with cold water prep.

The cold was more enjoyable than I thought. Sorry, I feel I derailed the train a bit. There are some things that are done for the ritual, the stress relief more than quality shave.

I am learning to enjoy the process more than I thought.

To the OP you can buy essential oils and various carrier oils. A little dab of Essential oil goes a long way. The purpose of a preshave oil is to condition the skin and decrease friction. There are many carrier oils that will work. I recommend hemp seed oil. It has a lot of vitamins and nutrients that are great for skin. Most of the shaving soap and creams are pretty slick. Better to try and ask yourself if you like it.

I have recently made the switch to Noxema as well. I alternate with Proraso Pre/post shave cream and I must say it is a very nice addition to my routine. For a long time I had problems with my chin area and forever seemed to get weepers or abrasion. Since switching to Noxema and Proraso I have not had any problems. The extra slickness makes all the difference.

I believe the Noxzema product used for a pre shave is their regular skin cleanser cream. The Noxzema shave cream is foam in a can. They used to make an excellent regular shave cream in a tube but that has been gone for a loooong time.
Check out the ingredients list on a no name skin cleanser to see if the two have the same ingredients.

Yeah I use noxzema classic clean original deep cleansing cream. Comes in a twelve oz tub. It's 4 bucks at target or Walmart can find it with the face washes and acne stuff.

I use Proraso Green Preshave cream. It works great for me.
