I was going to suggest using lard, but quality lard is getting hard to find in the supermarket these days.

Thanked: 18I find lard here by the buckets. But, the hardest lard to find and the finest is called "leaf lard". Cant recall what part of the pig this is garnered from, but it was the perfered lard to use in making pie crusts by my grandmother.
" The highest grade of lard, known as leaf lard, is obtained from the "flare" visceral fat deposit surrounding the kidneys and inside the loin. Leaf lard has little pork flavor, making it ideal for use in baked goods, where it is valued for its ability to produce flaky, moist pie crusts."
Just pulled this off of internet site. Now I know where the leaf lard comes from. I guess it is purchasable. I noted sites on the internet which sells it, but since it comes off the kidney of the pig I am guessing it is quiet expensive.

Thanked: 18Used to make the finest pie crusts in the world, I should say "leaf lard" gathered from around the pigs kidney. The other lard is rendered from pig fat and is still used in baking, deep frying and other cooking events. I have no idea how it plays out in shaving, I guess a last resort if you have nothing else. Obviously cheaper than the $9.95 cent little bottle of fancy oils. I have used the oil once "Somerset" and it is, in my opinion useless. Hand soap lathered up works better than the oil.

Thanked: 18OldSalt: this is obviously an opinion with only anecdotal experience to go by, but I would not waste my money. I did on a similar product. The product was an oil that came in a tiny squeeze bottle and they claimed one drop is all you need for your whole face. Hm-m-m. I had to use 7 to eight drops, and I have a beard. When I shaved I never noticed a difference. My guess is that Mineral Oil will do just as well....Actually I tried mineral oil and found no added benefit. Now there will be varying opinions, but I will venture a guess, if you have a course beard a little oil is not going to improve the condition. If you have a light beard I would guess the oil is not going to make any difference. Remember, this is my opinion and not a fact.
