Have you tried Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo recently? No more tears eh? I have some and got it in my eyes and it burned like a son of a gun and besides that the lather was about the poorest in any product I've ever seen.

I remember a professor in a class I was taking in college telling us that the reason original Johnson's Baby Shampoo didn't sting eyes was because it contained a small amount of Novocaine to numb the eyes and thus, no stinging. Of course, this was false, but that was WAY before the internet was available for vetting such information and therefore many urban legends found their way into false information sources. Even colleges. Sad but true.

Anyway, I never tried Baby Shampoo as a preshave. This may not be popular with the masses, but I stick with Proraso Pre Shave Cream, even though it's more expensive than Noxema. It works, and I like the brand. I don't always use it, but when I do, I enjoy the extra protection it seems to offer.

I've been doing my fair share of Cella products lately, and I've been using the Cella Pre Shave Gel more and more. The scent is semi-neutral, so I have used the Cella Pre Shave Gel with other soaps and creams as well as with Cella Soap and Aftershave. I would not rate it quite as high as I would Proraso Pre Shave, but it's more convenient in a squeeze tube, and it's a gel VS a paste, so to some this may be the preferred packaged pre-shave.... at least from an Italian shaving supplier.

For the MdC folks, I’ve used the Martin de Candre Hazelnut and borage shampoo as a pre shave since I use it as a shampoo and youur beard is hair …. I was impressed with it. Works as well as anything, and it’s relatively cheap, not a word that you usually associate with MdC products. ‘Aux huiles vierges de noisette et de bourrache’ - ‘With virgin oils of hazelnut and borage’. Good stuff, it’s more conditioning than their ‘À l’ortie et à la capucine’ or ‘Nettles and nasturtium’ shampoo, the stuff for normal hair.

I have quit using Noxema. It made my skin very soft and prone to nicks.

These days I use tepid water with a mild detergent to clean my beard.
This is followed with a shaving soap. This soap remains on the beard for about 7 minutes.
This pres have soap is then rinsed off and is followed by the actual shaving soap.

Take a shower, lather n shave.
Preshave, is for kids.
