Thanked: 235I used to have a steam sauna at the gym before my shave. I think it did help, but I really did it because it felt very relaxing.

Shaving BEFORE sauna bath tells you how good your shaving technique actually is.

Think the issue is not whether your technique is good, but whether it is pleasant to you to soften your hairs.
Think most people here have a nice technique. But they like that little bit extra.

Couldn't agree more . Even if a Standard Shave manual was out there, that's all it would be...a Standard Shave Manual. You define what the ultimate shave is.
As to the difference between hot shower and Sauna...this is the debate between hot water and steam. Steam is much more beneficial, imo. Hot water shower are normally done with municipal tap water which have been treated with chlorine and other chemicals. Detoxification can definitely occur with showers, hot tubs and hot baths. you absorb chlorine and perhaps hundreds of other volatile organic chemicals present in tap water supplies.
Steam (Sauna's) have a different mechanisms of action. The steam created is the result of evaporating water (tap) which tends to leave the impurities behind (not all)...think of it as "purer" water. This hot steam (still water) allows for better extraction and secretion of toxins from your skin. Dry sauna has essentially the same effect, but without the steam.
As much as I would love to do the sauna thing (if I had one) in my place every morning, it would be time prohibitive. I live with a hot shower and I get a fantastic shave

Thanked: 16So I gave it a try.... mind you I'm wearing a full beard at the moment for the dead of winter but had a few days of neck beard and lines to trim up on the cheeks.... got a good sweat going got out showered the sweat off got a second good sweat going made up some soap and glycerin lather and went at it in the dry sauna...
enjoyable? yes.... messy? not as bad as I thought do have one towel to wash and a second that was at risk but was spared...
my greatest shave ever? far from it... although I attribute this mostly to not being used to having to hold a mirror while trying to shave and skin stretch via odd facial contortions... although I gotta say... this is almost the smoothest my neck has ever been and with far less paying attention to the two patches of my neck hair that grow in some unholy spiral pattern and insist on leaving bits of stubble....
it will likely be repeated...
