Thanked: 16Sauna....
Soo... this was suggested to me many years ago as the particular gentleman's ultimate shave... he was a Sauna officianado and went at least 4 times a week but he insisted he got his closest shaves pre dates when he was sweating bullets and pores wide open after a good 10 mins in the sauna....
Anyone tried this? I've been tempted but the sheer amount of laundry involved in having to wipe your blade off on a towel after each stroke and I'm not sure I'd trust my hand to be steady enough with a straight after so much heat......
(to be clear he shaved with a little mirror and a handful of towels IN the sauna...)

Pre Shave Preparation . . .
Hello, FreyGrimrod:
Who is to say what the ultimate shave is? No standard measure has been established. Nor can it be established, because each face is different, as is the product's reaction to that specific face, and each shaver's description differs from that of another.
I am sure your friend experienced what he considered the ultimate shave in the sauna and following his own method. Would I have the same result following his routine? Perhaps. Or not.
The questions is would I want to shave that way?
Absolutely not.
I would prefer to take a steam bath and then shave at the sink, using my methods. Would I, then, experience the ultimate shave? Yes, I would. But would you have the same results? Only you would know, because you have set the standard for your ultimate shave.
Regards,
Obie

I agree with Obie here, do what what works for you. If thats how he got his best shave and thats what worked for him, great!
Its not what I would do. I find a hot shower with a rub of conditioner in the beard, followed by some Trumpers moisturiser under a hot towel, then lather and shave is the best shave for me. Would it be the best for someone else? Who knows?
Thats what makes this fun!

Thanked: 16Indeed why I tried to point out it was what he considered to be....
I guess this more comes back to the debate between the warm water or cold water shaving and pore dilation... *hopes he hasn't ended any marriages with the possibility of Sauna's being built onto shave den's...*

Have it several times since I regularly go to the sauna.
After a sauna session, your hair are sooo soft that you can shave your beard with a kitchen knife instead a razor
A must try to shave after the sauna ... yes

So I say to this, everyone should have a home sauna.
Good for your hair to soften before shaving, and good for your body.

I have to say that i do it almost every day. Here a house without a sauna is something beyond imagination. I cannot say for sure if sauna makes shaves better; probably it softens your hair a bit. Hot shower would do the same maybe but who's to spend in shower that hot as long as you would do in sauna.
Now remember that we are talking about real sauna with temps say 80 - 120 C (175 - 250 F), not those cold steam rooms i've seen abroad.'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'

I am sure that a sauna makes your hair softer than a hot shower. I realy do notice a difference between them . A better pre-shave, you can not have.
And yes I mean the hot cabins, 90 * to 120 * not the steam rooms. (This is for women/guy's who are not habituated to sauna, but still want to join. It is now days trendy as you go to the sauna.)

I grew up with a sauna at our house but have not had access to one since I started shaving. Saunas are very popular in my home area of Northern Minnesota since there is a a large population of people with Finnish ancestry.
I recall reading a local article written within the last century about public saunas in Ely, MN where a benefit the lumberjacks gave for saunas were the fact that their beards would soften to the point that they needed no shaving soap, etc.
On a trip back home, I'd like to try a long hot sauna, a week worth of whisker growth then a shave.
