I've tried the cold water shaving thing on numerous occasions.
I believe it does well for some people, but I'm not one of them.
I get wonderful shaves using warm water, and the added comfort is what will keep me locked to that instead of the cold water version.

I tried cold water shaving but I do not like it. I really like warm water over cold one. But, yes the cold water provides closer shave.

I keep my whole shave VERY cold. I also finish the last half of my showers with cold water. It is actually very good for the body. To me, there is nothing better than the cold wake up. Cold showers and shave followed by espresso is my recipe for a good day!
...cold shaving...I've had to do out here quite often...cold showering...I'll politely decline...lol

The Road question is one I live with as I enjoy the What If? scenarios. What if I had to head for the hills with just one or two hones? A belgian coticule would be one but I'd also take some DMT folders with me as they're light weight and I can go from Coarse to Extra Fine to 3000 grit in a very small package that's lightweight. Perfect thing to put in your shopping cart as you head down the Road!

BTW, I keep the two DMT stones in my belt pack kit which is always with me. They're the double sided butterfly knife style package. The combo will sharpen anything from a knife to an axe to a razor.
...from what I know, two reason to justify cold water shving could include
    1. the swelling of the skin as you alluded to and
    2. the tiny muscles in each hair follicle (erector pillae if I remember correctly) contract and cause you whiskers to become erect, same as when you get goosebumps from being cold...same same...so they are more inclined to givwe a sharp razor a more inviting target...I've cold water shaved and hot water shave and I think I like the cold shaving better...

I've tried cold shaving. It's not for me. With cold shaving I can't enjoy all advantages of good soap.

I am a complete beginner (<10 shaves) and the last 3 have been with cold water, all of which have resulted in single pass BBF with absolutely no irritation and greatly reduced prep time.

No question this is the way to go.

Winter here now, so cold showers are out, but the cold shave doesn't change...It just gets better!
