Thread: Cold water shave

There might be an explanation that has been missed here! If this is true than we can use BOTH hot and cold water and benefit from both-there was an old movie where these two gangsters were talking about shaving,the movie was called "Millers Grossing",a really good movie and might explain this whole hot and cold thing. I agree that hot water is nicer on the skin but in the movie the Boss is explaining to one of his underlings that he should use cold water BECAUSE it contracts the metal of the razor-thus making any small imperfections in the blades edge come together.
This makes sense since it does just that-so if you soften your beard with hot water and run under cold water the edge should be better as it will contract and tighten up the edge...Ive tried it,and gotten good shaves...just food for thought,YMMV

I just started the cold water shaves recently and have been finding that I have been getting a nice finish. Much less irritation on my neck than with the hot water prep. I do however miss that fine warm lather on the face.

Might go for a hot water prep tonight on that note.

Just finished with a cold shave and as usual,always refreshing and smooth.

The last two weeks shave with cold water. I like the result.
turns out cleaner than with hot water and no cuts. It seems that the skin becomes tougher. Bristle itself up, it's easier to shave.

I continued cold water shave before the shower and have found it to actually increase my post-shower razor burn and face dryness. Not sure if I should be taking the hot shower and then cold-toweling my face before the shave or if the cold shave before the hot shower is the way to go. Have gone back to hot shave with fairly equal results so not sure about this any more...

Groovd, I've been cold shaving for a long time with the best results. My Method is to shower, then with any extra beard prep needed, shave with the coldest water you can get from the sink. With enough water of any temp my beard and skin are easily prep'd. It just seems to me that a cold shave then a hot shower may just a bout ensure any man with razor burn. ymmv

sounds like hot shower then step out to a bit of proraso and an ice towel on the face before lather and shave is the ticket. The water out of my faucet is not cold enough here in Atlanta to make it a true cold water shave without ice. I was cold shaving first then taking my shower as I heard from someone on this site that it was the most convenient way to handle the post shave rinse but the hot water following the cold shave does seem to strip too much.

perhaps i need to keep a set of shave towels rolled up inside one of those small personal igloo ice chests covered in ice.

You really don't need Ice water to do a cold shave.Just cool water will work fine.Just wash your face with glycerine soap before your shave.That will help moisturize your face before the shave.Glycerine attracts moisture.Also if you are getting razor burn,try finishing off with some witch hazel .It works great for soothing razor burn.Ogallala Bay rum Aftershaves are a great way to get witch hazel to your skin with the added bonus of making you smell good as it's one of the ingredients.And there is no burn.

well it was 96 in in pa yesterday when i was out tilling and seeding oat and wheat, so i enjoyed a cool shower and a ice cold water shave after beign outside for 8 hrs in a blazing hot field.

Same summer problems in DC too. I'll just slide an Ice cube over my face for a minute or so just prior to lathering up. Sometimes the faucet temp won't get cold enough for my preference.
