Scuttles really are a product of what you are looking for in one. For those that like mixing suds in them, you need a wider bowl and that gives a way some of the heat preserving, but a little water in the bottom of the top bowl helps. When you are just looking for keeping the suds warm thought the shave, then a 3 inch or so wide bowl by 2 1/2 inches deep is good. The Moss scuttle was really the first that had enough water between the two bowls to really maintain the heat for the brush though multiple passes. When I was looking to improve on the Moss, I went with the pitcher looking type scuttle which you see others doing these days. I find that these really are the best for keeping the suds warm through 2 or 3 passes of shaving. Many of the bowls are good for lathering. I am still a fan of face lathering and tend to let my brush soak in a filled upper bowl of a scuttle prior to putting the first lather.

    Have fun.

I think I might order one from SRD, I was browsing through yesterday & thought of how nice it would be to have hot lather for the entire shave.

When I got started using a straight razor , the only scuttles available were the old style . They never really appealed to my taste , so I pretty much forgot about scuttles .
A few days ago I see a pic of the new style scuttle , which I think is pretty cool , but I'm a face latherer , so I don't really need a bowl , still it would work to keep my soap filled brush warm . I can't believe I've been doing this for 5 years , and never knew about the new style scuttles .
So , I go to the Dirty Bird site , and find that not only do they have bowl scuttles , they also have BRUSH SCUTTLES . Wow , I didn't know about those either .
I can't wait for it to arrive , now I will have warm lather for the second lathering , and a handy place to keep my brush while I'm shaving .

I recently received my SRD scuttle. I had been shaving using cold water only for the last year. My first time using the scuttle, the first pass over my face was an ah ha moment....Hot lather is sublime lol

I still will use cold water with proraso/vulfix lime/al's bomb because the scent really plays better with cold water, but I must say I now know what all the hubbub is about! The scuttle keeps the lather warm through 4 passes if you want it to, but I only do 2 passes and touch ups. Still I do use the left over lather to condition my face after the shave, and it is nice to have the warm lather for that as well. Definitely a great product at a very decent price, and dang they ship fast to boot lol

Well, I only use a Sara Bonniman Texan Moss Scuttle for shaving every single day. I understand what the majority of the people said about the scuttles that are only created for creams but I use both soaps and creams. Let me tell you for me it works perfect due to the fact that in the texan one you will have a very good opening on the upper cup for a cake of Harris soap. The heat hold the cake stick at the buttom and if you leave some water around the upper cup you can re used if you see some section of the lather dry. Let me tell you it works fine because as Lynn said you make the lather in your face not in the bowl.

I just bought a brush scuttle from DirtyBird pottery. I am a face latherer and man thsi thing keeps the brush nice and hot for my morning routine (2 passs face shave and 2 pass head shave).

There is a 4-6 week wait now for any scuttle on that site but it's worth the wait. Also SRD has a nice brush scuttle with a handle.

    Good luck

Arrived today, and it's truly a work of art. I almost can't wait to heat it up and use it... Is it tomorrow morning yet?

I'd like to get a scuttle for making lather in the bowl. Right now all I do is face lather, so I'm looking for a change.

Any scuttles that are really suited for lathering IN the bowl?

All items except the mug at WM for under $5(pet section). Microwave some water to a boil and pour into the black crock and it will stay hot!!! for a while. Hot lather.
