Can I use shaving gel as prep?
Hi guys,
Just a quick one. My mam bought me a little shaving cream, gel and balm set. Why you'd need cream and gel I don't know.
It has occurred to me that I may be able to use the gel as a pre shave. A little dollop on the fingertips, a little bit of water and massage in before you make lather to let it do the do.
What do you reckon?

It would be worth a try. Go for it.

Sure why not. As long as it does not effect the density of the lather.
From their stillness came their non-action...Doing-nothing was accompanied by the feeling of satisfaction, anxieties and troubles find no place

Dave:
What brand of product is that? I assume by gel you mean shave gel. Yes, of course, as the other gentlemen have suggested, you can try the gel as a pre-shave. Or get a proper pre-shave. Castle Forbes is top quality. Trumper's Skin Food can be used as a pre-shave. Also, Edwin Jagger, Taylor of Old Bond Street and Proraso produce quality pre-shaves at a reasonable price. Might as well go with the real stuff.

It's the Real Shaving Company gel. It came with a little set my mum got me for christmas. I've never used gel to shave, there was one unpleasant experience in the Iraqi desert with cold water and king of shaves oil, I tend to use cream and until recently it was exclusively Ingram.
That said, I don't like to throw something away if I can find a use for it.
I'll give it a bash tonight. Worst case scenario is probably a bit of razor burn!
I will keep you updated.
EDIT: I use Nuage preshave oil generally.

Thanked: 1936If you shower before the shave, I use simple hair conditioner for the head on my face after I have scrubbed my head. While I am cleaning up the rest of my body the conditioner is softening my face & beard. I use Head & Shoulders conditioner, but I'm sure any will work. I rinse off, towel off everything but my face, make up a nice bowl of lather and shave.

I'm going to pop into Crabtree and Evelyn and have a look at what they have. I'm a little waery of buying something like a cosmetic product without being able to feel the consistency smell it etc.
Crabtree and Evelyn do free samples too so may be cheeky and ask for a sample of a few and see where I get.
I have made a note of those mentioned and will hang onto it. I think with my skin type (stupidly sensitive) i'll find a few products and stick with them. Thats a lie, I'm like a kid in a sweet shop!

The answer, if anyone is interested, is you can use it but it's not really any better than what I normally use, if at all.
If I was stuck I would use it but not as a matter of course.
Jar of proraso white ordered! Thanks for the tips chaps

I bought some shave cream, and I ended up not liking it. Now I use it as a facial cleaner and thus beard prep'er in my shower before a shave. I always feel that the name of the game is to saturate my skin and facial hair with moisture after a thorough cleaning. All in one product for me. YMMV of course.
