Whatever works for you is always the best method.
As to shaving the tough areas. I have heard two suggestions. The first is the one you put forward let them soak longer. The other is shave them first as your blade will be at its sharpest at that time.

Thanked: 2I have the same problem. I have just been adding a dab of water to the brush and then lathering over my old lather, essentially re lathering as I go.
It is nice to know that the scuttle helped you out, thanks for posting your solution.

Thanked: 0Wow. I wish I wasn't about to walk out the door with stubble. I have to be in early today so I didn't have time to shave this morning. I've been following this thread all week because my new Porasso preshave was giving me trouble. I've never had my lather dry out, but the first time I used the Porasso I lathered right over it, stropped, then shaved. Halfway through it looked like it was snowing from the dried Porasso flaking off. The second time I used considerably less, lathered after stropping and by the end of the shave still had dried cream.
So tonight ill wet further before cream, get a good and wet lather after stropping, rewet often and I'm definitely shaving my upper lip and chin first. Brilliant idea- much obliged for putting that out there. Thanks!

I found the soap dries fast but I am new and I think the time it takes to shave is more the problem. I have had more luck with the creams, seem to stay moist longer. The second pass XTG seems fine cream never dries, but I also feel more confident with the razor on my second pass

Thanked: 2I have heard other mention before that the proraso pre shave dries out your lather and I am inclined to agree. My second pass with no pre shave always goes smoother in terms of razor glide and the lather not drying out.
That being said, I do like using the pre shave, the second pass never feels as good afterwards as the first pass does.
Do you all use the pre shave before each pass or just before the first pass?

I have a very similar problem, I use Proraso preshave cream as well as proraso tube shave cream and I find that it flakes off rather easily. I do, however, intend to try working up a lather in a cup tomorrow morning (I normally put a bit of cream on my brush, after wetting it, and then lather on my face) to see if I can solve the problem with a little water experimentation. If not, perhaps I'll use my cromwell and cruthers shave oil as a pre shave and see what that does.

I should add that in addition to using more water in my lather, I have been doing half of my face and then just "touching up" (running the lathered brush over the still-lathered part of my face again) the lather on the other side of my face before I continue on... Rewets things and makes it easier to shave.

I had much better luck today with adding more water.
