I would use a alum bloc after your done shaving, they work great for weepers, cuts, knife wounds.

Speaking of alum, does an alum block sting as much as a styptic pen? I have started using my styptic as an all over face rub post shave, and that damned thing stings like hell. And as it dries I end up with a tight, dry whitish residue on my face. I usually use my brush which is still damp to wet it and let my skin release to stop the pulling. Does alum do the same thing, or is that more a result of the styptic pencil material (too lazy to go look at it right now).

Alum block stings somewhat, depending on how scraped / nicked up your face is. Not as bad as styptic on a cut, although I'm comparing apples and oranges - I use alum if I haven't cut my face, and styptic if I have, so it isn't a fair test.

I think alum and styptic are both aluminium sulphates (alums), which can be aluminium only, or with potassium or ammonium present as well. Not sure which is used for what - they're all astringent and coagulant.

For me, I found that I got best results if I applied the alum block and washed it off again quickly. If I leave it on my skin for any length of time, it makes my face feel like a cartoon animal whose head has been turned into a balloon. We've all been there, I'm sure.

Yep, if you get carried away and end up with a lot of razor burn, the alum block will definitely let you know. But, I use it after every shave, now, and personally think it helps a great deal. I rinse my face with cold water after my shave, use the alum, strop, rinse with cold water again, then proceed with after shave and balm. Overall, it really seems to help that "raw" feeling on my face go away quicker.

Don't worry, I do take on board most of the advice given by the folks round here, its feels a bit like an army of kind uncles, I think if I met Carl he would make me laugh, and I'd have someone new to play cribbage with. :-)
