Decided To Try My Hand At Making Beard Oil
Decided to try my hand at making Beard Oil today... Online Companies charge around $20/ounce and I thought I could do better... Turns out I was right! 3.4 ounces Argan Oil= $15, 1 ounce Patchouli essential oil= $7, Nag Champa essential oil= $6 and Sandalwood essential oil= $5 so total cost for ingredients was around $36 with tax included. I knew Argan Oil was going to be my Primary/Carrier Oil and after some experimentation with the above Scents my Recipe is: 67% Argan Oil, 23% Primary Scent (Patchouli or Nag Champa) and 10% Secondary Scent (Sandalwood... Which did not do well as a Primary Scent)... The Patchouli Primary brings the bright/vanilla tones of the Argan Oil down for a more Woodsy Scent whereas the Nag Champa Primary brings the bright/vanilla tones out for a Fresher Scent. Great stuff this Beard Oil and the Argan Oil really helps to condition, soften and relax your beard hair! Spread the word and save some dough!!!
To play with the percentages I just filled syringes with a bit of each oil then used drops onto a Little Wasabi Plate, mixed with a cut-off cotton swab, dipped the other end for a Scent Test and used a finger to then dip in and apply to my beard. My Wife was right there helping me out doing the Pre-Sniff and Post-Application Sniff Test.
The Argan Oil is readily available at Beauty Supply places and we sourced the Eseential Oils from a local Soapmaker's Shop so it is likely you could save even more ordering the Oils Online.
I had lots of fun and was surprised at overall how easy it was... Took maybe an hour and a half total to go buy the ingredients, set up the gear, mix, test, apply then do the math. I plan on doing a similar trial with a different bouquet of scents more toward Fresh/Citrus at a later date so am thinking of scents along those lines now... Post ideas if you have any!
Shawn

Just got done playing around a bit more... This time, using the same percentages, I tried Bergamot and Lavender as Primary Scents with Lime as the Secondary Scent in each... The Lavender as Primary brought out the Floral tones but the Lime kept it tame in the Dude Realm and the Bergamot brought out the Citrus tones which the Lime enhanced.
Bergemot and Lavender were both more expensive than the darker scents but Lime was right in that same $5-$6 range. So, depending on what you are looking to do it could push the price up a bit... But, having the ability to mix your own scents is truly a treat anyone should consider taking advantage of! And, if you had a few people interested you could save tons as you end up with a lot leftover from the Scents!
Really glad I tried pushing the Citrus as I'd been interested in trying Lime Shaving Cream but had no point of reference... With the positive results from these experiments I am definitely going to try Lime TOBS in the near future!
I believe these Oils could easily work quite well as a Pre-Shave Oil as well as Beard Oil... If you were looking for something lighter it might also work as a Light Cologne!
Very fun stuff!!

LOL! Yeah, the squeaking makes sleep nearly impossible at times!

Beard Oil is basically conditioner/scent for your beard hair... My beard kinda grows tight and kinky in some areas and so I'd tried regular condtioners, waxes and lots of stroking/combing... Then I came across an Ad for a Beard Oil and read up more about it to see what the deal was with the $20/ounce price and came to the conclusion I'd rather just try making it myself than drop $20 sight/smell unseen/unsniffed for an ounce of something I had zero experience with. Then, during the PacNW Spring Meet this last weekend Gerrit/Deighaingeal was mentioning something about it and that the main ingredient was Argan Oil which was readily available at Beauty Supply Shops. I'd read about the benefits of Argan Oil on the Beard Oil Site as they stated it was a main ingredient. Ultimately, I put all the info together, gave it a shot and it worked really, really well.
From what I can tell just from playing with it making these scents, Argan Oil would make a great Oil in whatever Shave Application as it has just a very interesting and pleasant scent as well as all the properties of Shave Oils... Seems it has been used as a Deep Conditioner for Women's Hair, particularly safe for colored/treated hair as it contains no alcohol. ?!
I had a blast doing this and my goat is way happier and looking great! What sparked a lot of this Beard Thinking is a guy with a full-beard approached me at a Fund-Raiser Yard Sale where I was selling/displaying some Wet Shaving Gear and he explained he is part of a movement to get guys to grow beards which I got a kick out of as he was basically describing the antithesis of SRP... Anyway, I've had a goatee for years yet still love SR Shaving so it got my mind spinning again on how I could maybe take better care of/pamper my facial hair... Which lead to my same User-Friendly/Do-It-Yourself Approach after which I enjoyed the results and had to share!

More particulars in case anyone is game to give it a try:
One Ounce = 29.57cc
**Using syringe/needle was the easiest draw method!
So, I just rounded up to 30cc after which the percentages equaled:
20cc Argan Oil
7cc Primary Scent
3cc Secondary Scent
You end up with a bit over an ounce and I used One Ounce Cobalt (Blue) Glass Apothecary Bottles w/Droppers which just worked perfect. Just a few drops of this stuff goes a LONG way!Last edited by Prahston; 05-21-2014 at 12:11 AM.

Thanked: 375I agree Beard oil is expensive! I did the same thing as you and made my own with Jojoba oil, Coconut oil, Grape seed oil. Worked as intended and also as a pre-shave oil. I also made some stache wax out of Bees wax and coconut oil 50/50 mix. Although I usually don't sport a stache I do sport a goat-tee, doesn't provide great hold but keeps things looking well groomed and it doubles as a lip balm (minus the girly looking shine) winner in my book. I didn't mess with the E.O's

@Timmy72... Thanks for sharing! I like that combination you posted and I already have the Coconut Oil as we use it for my Dog. Never thought about making my own Lip Balm but sounds straightforward as well. Wish I would have known about this stuff when I was a teenager... I would have saved a MINT! ;-)

Thanked: 375I was trying to make mustache wax, and had seen one afternoon on TV that Dr. Oz had recommended Coconut oil instead of lip balm - so I thought why not try it..... I have coconut oil mixed with the beeswax. One product, two issues solved....I think over use of lip balms (commercial) actually will peel the skin away if used a lot.
This 50/50 mix sets up quite hard, so just like mustache wax you'll have to scrap it out with your finger nail. Keeping it in your pocket keeps it more pliable.
The beard oil I use in the winter as an aftershave/moisturizer. The oils absorb well (take it easy on the coconut oil) and kept my face and scalp from drying out, but wasn't greasy like a lot of balms I've used.CHRIS
