I have dry skin so even though I like the feel of aftershaves with alcohol; I can not really use them. I have tried several different aftershave balms, and finally realised that I could make it my dam self.

Now I buy unscented body milk by the half-gallon, and a few choice Essential Oils for around $35. Then I pick up some Dickens Witch Hazel, and Cornhusker Lotion from the local drug store $10. I mix these in a cool old shaker bottle my mother-in-law had, and I will probably not buy any more for about 10 years.

I almost have Colleen's Orange-Patchoulii scent duplicated on my aftershvae balm to match her shaving cream. I also make a mean Bay Rum balm.

I usually splash some witch hazel on and one of the following; Floris Santal, Skin Food, or Prep. I really like the Prep, it's awesome stuff, IMHO.

You may think this is pretty strange but I have very dry skin so after a shave I like something that'll replace the natural oils lost in the shaving process (I wouldn't recommend this to someone with oily skin).

    3 of Jojoba Oil
    1 of Avocado Oil
    1-2 drops of Sandalwood Oil
    1-2 drops of Cedarwood Oil.

Those last two just for scent so probably personal preference there. Put it in a bottle with a flip up spout and one or two drops is plenty to recondition the skin, you don't want to overdo it. If you want to try this it's worth paying the extra and making sure you get real Sandalwood (Santalum Alban) not the crappy stuff. Your skin will feel greasy for 30 - 60 min afterwards until it gets absorbed (or whatever happens).

After much experimentation (and money) what works for me is regular aloe vera and on the other end of the price spectrum, Trumpers Skin Food. Kiehl's "multi-purpose moisturizer for men" is also in my arsenal and I use it every now and then. . . IMO, if you use a proper soap/cream you don't need much of an aftershave product.

for special occasions i mix up a bit of pinaud clubman bay rum with a cologne i got from the dollar store called "canoe" and a few drops of almond and vanilla extract.
    It makes a great scent.
