Hehe, yep....it's quite a deep rabbit hole ain't it? The 'enthusiastic hobbyists' who are attracted to fragrances are a pretty intensely passionate bunch. I'm sure almost everyone they talk to (outside of their forum) about their 'hobby' thinks they're a little nuts. Jeez, why does that sound familiar?
Here's a thread posted on basenotes, which is a tremendous resource to access when curious about what educated people feel a scent is like. There's many many posts on 'sandalwood' if you do a search.....very good reading.
Anyway, this link goes to a member who posted on Basenotes. Go to the third post in the thread, and read that member's comments . He goes by 'Profumo', and has a website that showcases his very unusual offerings. He has a very interesting philosophy when it comes to how scents affect us (in other than olfactory ways). He talks about the different emotions certain fragrances tend to bring out, and other kinda esoteric things. He also seems to know a LOT about what's up with the fragrance thing in general . Sleekit? This gentleman knows his sandalwood, as you'll find if you read his posts. Of course, I'm not suggesting or steering you to purchase from him, but if you did I'd imagine his sandalwood might be a good one to try. I've emailed back and forth a few times to him, and he seems a first rate gentleman. His creations (custom blended EdP's) are quite pricey, and would be difficult for me to order blind, but ordering a single note scent would be a different matter. I mainly wanted to give you a little more info about that fragrance, and Profumo (Salaam) has some excellent thoughts on that.
Hehe, that should take you a little deeper down that hole, and his site is pretty interesting to look over. He has very unusual fragrances for sale, including tincture of ambergris.....not to encourage you at all......

Wait now.............you live in Scotland and don't speak Italian? Sorry, I just now kinda figured out that was something I took for granted............ You SURE you don't speal Italian?

My favorite is Floris - however it is discontinued, so that likely isn't going to be an option for you, unless you want to make your life miserable and start hunting it down... Tam Dao is supposed to be rather nice - I haven't tried it myself.

For a sandalwood cologne, I highly recommend Meehan Sandalwood. The only two ingredients in this cologne are sandalwood oil (from east India) and distilled wine (i.e., Cognac). Very nice indeed.

I also really like Taylor Sandalwood although it is a completely different scent from the Meehan.
