    I would say that it depends on what kind of AS and what effect you are looking for. I use balms for the most part. If I am in a hurry and I want my face to soak it in quickly, then I will leave some water on my face to thin it out a little bit. I usually use oil free balms, so they mix well with water.

    For a regular shave, though, I will pat dry and then apply some witch hazel. When that's done air drying, I will slather on a coat of balm or moisturizer.

    I don't use aftershave, unless you count witch hazel as aftershave.

    Here is how I do it:

    Splash with cold water
    Pat dry
    AS Lotion/Skin Food/that kind of thing
    Drink coffee get dressed while that dries
    Splash with pinaud/booster/etc before walking out the door for a scent.

    Pat dry, Witch Hazel, then aftershave works for me.

    lightly dry then apply clubman like it was coming out of a fire hose
