Thread: Homemade Pre Shave Oil

The most common pre-shave oil recipe I've found is one part castor oil with one part olive oil and add EO to taste.......er, preference. Castor oil dries the skin while olive oil moisturizes. I would imagine adding less castor oil and more olive oil would be better. Adding those two to grapeseed oil would be interesting, but I haven't read much about that. I'm itching to experiment!

Grapeseed oil could make you break out. Not guaranteed, but it did me. Sunflower is interesting--it's in the T&H & Pacific Shave Oil, which by the sound of it, might do well as a (cheap!) preshave. Still haven't found it in a store, though.

I'm experimenting with Castor, Olive, Sunflower, Grapeseed, and JoJoba oils. I find the Olvie to be overpowering and smelly. I'm liking the Sunflower, Grapeseed, and JoJoba oils, with a dash of Olive. I bought a bunch of EO's and some FO's to play around. If I get it right, I may send out samples for the cost of shipping.....

I haven't used any of the pre-shave oils yet. I use the Proraso Pre/Post cream in my prep routine, but I am interested in making my own preshave oil. Right now I am curing my first batch of homemade aftershave which will take two weeks to cure. Anyone contributing to this thread has tried concocting his own aftershave? I actually bought the Pacific Shave Oil before I switched to the straight.

It's a good shave oil, and smells of citrus, which is pleasant. I do still occasionally use it as a pre-shave oil, but most of the time, I just lather up.

The bottle of PSO will last you a LONG time. I've had mine for over a year (I dont shave everyday though.)

you are saying that you find the olive oil to be overpowering. It depends which Olive oil you use. The EVOO has the strongest scent, if you use regular Oliveoil say the cheapest @ Walmart, it barely has a scent to it.

I use olive and castor oils (~ 2:1), the castor part might be increased a bit during the summer. The quality of the olive oil is important.

I usually replace a bit of the olive oil with grapeseed and sweet almond and add a few drops of glycerin.
