Which Thayer's are you referring to. I use the Witch Hazel Skin Astringent w. Aloe and hardly notice any scent.

The only witch hazel that I have ever smelled
is cheap store brands. Too me the stuff has
    a sour smell.

WOW, I kinda like the earthiness of witch hazel, but I don't even find the Thayer's very strong at all. Gegtik once told me it was the best aftershave he'd ever tried. A lot of guys like Williamson soap too, but I can't stand the smell of that stuff. To each his own I guess.

it sort of smells like mediciney melted rubber or plastic. once it's on my face, i don't really notice anything. if you stick your nose in the bottle and get a good draught, though, it's pretty overwhelming. am i completely alone here? maybe i did get a bad bottle...

Well, I just stuck my nose right in the bottle and can see how that might be a 'true' statement so I doubt you're off base. You might be showing your emotional response however. Like I say, I don't mind that smell. That's just me though. Anybody else with opinions on Thayer's Witch Hazel?

I've got Thayer's with Lavender, Rose and the regular with Aloe Vera. No bad smell from any of them. Possible a bad bottle? I've tried two different bottles of Dickinson's Witch Hazel, tossed them both in the bin.

Default Don't pay extra for fancy witch hazel spend the money in the cologne

I always use witch hazel just to soothe the skin immediately after the razor and rinse, I buy the cheap kind made by Good Sense $1.99. I never thought it was meant to smell good it's just an astringent it is in fact a neutral smell, anyhow the funny smell goes away as soon as it dries 10 secs. then you follow up with Cologne for the good smell.

For the Scotch drinkers two of my favorite single malts Cardhu & Dalmore. To add on to the Prof"s comment if you plan to ingest it try to invest in the best, therefore save the money from the expensive witch hazel and use it for good cologne and good Single Malt Scotch.
