I have worn literally hundreds of colognes and have narrowed my top 20 to those which I have included below. My favorites tend to be soapy, woody, spicy or citrus with a scattering of earth, moss and leather. I have also discovered that aside from pepper, I can do without spices as well as the gourmand, fruity, herbal, green, floral and powdery colognes.
My top 10 are considerably less expensive than the rest of them so the adage "you get what you pay for" does not generally apply to colognes. I am also confident with wearing every one of my top 10 at any time of the year for business or casual.
My Top 10:
Tom Ford Grey Vetiver (soapy & peppery vetiver) $120/100ml
Eastwest Bottlers Moonshine (peppery woods) $72/100ml
D.R. Harris & co. Windsor (peppery woods) $38/100ml
Borsari Acqua Classica (peppery & woody citrus) $19/50ml
Yardley Citrus & Woods (woody citrus) $19/50ml
Crown Perfumery Buckingham (soapy woods) out of production
Crown Perfumery Spiced Limes (soapy citrus) out of production
Pennhaligon's English Fern (soapy fern) $120/100ml
Sir Irisch Moos (soapy oakmoss) $22/50ml
HEELEY Sel Marin (woody marine) $180/100ml
Honorable Mention:
Mona di Orio Nombres d'Or Vetyver (cedar & vetiver) $170/100ml
Creed Original Vetiver (soapy vetiver) $315/120ml
Creed Green Irish Tweed (soapy floral) $315/120ml
Tom Ford Neroli Portofino (soapy neroli) $280/100ml
Montale Dark Aoud (oud & sandalwood) $110/50ml
Slumberhouse Norne (forest absolutes) $115/50ml while it lasts!
Sonoma Scent Studio Fireside Intense (smoky woods) inquire for bottles
L'Artisan Parfumeur Dzongkha (smoky woods & incense) $145/100ml
Humiecki & Graef Skarb (smoky woods & incense) $220/100ml
Lisa Kirk Revolution (woods & teargas) $50/12ml

I tried out Acqua di Parma's Colonia Intensa OUD Concentree yesterday.
I'm not an Oud fan at all, but this really caught my attention. It's a nice composition that really reminded me of the Middle East and all things oriental.

Thanked: 9One thing i think we should consider in this thread is AGE. Obviously if your 20 u dont want to smell like your retired or vise versa. Im going on 39 and Old Spice reminds me of Granddad as does clubman.

Great Fragrances
I run into this issue with SWMBO myself. I am 27 and she is 23. I tend to use AS balms and will wear AS on days I'm not shaving to moisturize and I enjoy the scent. I have tries Nivea, ironman by Avon, razorock don marco (which I love personally) and zi peppino, AoS lavender and sandlewood as well as old spice and had her sample clubman and brut.
She always tells me I smell like an old man. I can't figure out what I should be trying differently or new.

Thanked: 603Well, you could ask her what she really knows about "old men"... and how. Alternatively, you could find an "old woman" and hear what she has to say about it.
But probably the best solution would be to put the ball in her court, and see what she comes up with for a "younger" AS/ASB. Ya gotta learn to keep a woman "off-balance"

I've tried to get her to pick but with no luck thus far. Plus without recommendations it'll be tougher than just going all out. Anyone known if using a very light AS will let the smell of a soap or cream from your shave come through?

Tom Ford- Tobacco Vanile. I'm not sure of the spelling. This stuff is some of the most intoxicating stuff I've ever smelled. My wife goes crazy over it. Tons of compliments. $200 per 1.7oz. Bottle. But worth Every penny! My top cologne. I only wear about 1 time per week. Or out to dinner. It's that nice.
