Sure they did. They invented this stuff, called it "sandals" then. They even held the first marathon. Only one participant at that time - today there are ten-thousands.
Luckily the mobile communications network had not been as developed at that time, otherwise we would not have that today. No Marathon, no running shoes and probably not Nike...

But yes, nike does not translate to "running shoe"
