    Life was the trade mark of Francis Townsend. In 1845 Francis Townsend advertised in a Sheffield directory as a manufacturer of every description of table cutlery. During the 1860's the product line widened to include pen and pocket knives, scissors and razors. By 1871 the address had moved from Solly St. to Cambridge St. The company ceased trading in 1917.
