Thread: The Butcher Shop

I would like to make my application to the Shop.
This is it after a little retouching, pretty much removed varnish.
Second pic is before any work took place. The insignia reads "Wade & Butcher's Celebrated Fine India Steel Razor"
I am not sure of Its measurements/weight or age. Pretty sure that the scales are some type of horn, due to the keratination where it is peeling. Any help would be appreciated.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I have every intention of restoring this razor to its former shaving glory(minus a little more metal) of course. And with some of the restorations I have seen on this forum, I have but all faith.
Thanks,
FOrrest

Hey Forrestp.
I've got one of these. Posted it here somewhere. Great shaver.
Mine had 1 horn scale and plastic on the other side so I replaced them of course. Yours look ok. Sand them progressively up to 2000 grit, then a bit of wax and they'll shine like an 8 ball. Oh and lots of water- that dust stinks. Steel seems not badly pitted - Lucky you
PS Neatsfoot oil is a great conditioner for bone and hornThe white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Hello, I'm fairly new to straight shaving, I started with a 5/8 half hollow H. M. Christensen, but received this 6/8 razor today in the mail, purchased from dprender. I have a couple of questions,
1. What is the best way to clean up the blade?
2. Can anyone tell me what the probable material is for the scales?
3. Anyone know an approximate date range for when this was crafted?
4. Exactly what type of W&B is this?
5. if I remove the scales best way to clean them up for re-use?
I guess that's all for now, I shaved with her tonight and I really liked the control I felt with a bigger blade. I will be keeping this razor and would like her to look as beautiful as possible.

Thanked: 9Well, I can answer two of those questions:
1. The handle is most likely horn (someone else may be able to expand upon what type of horn is actually used)
2. That, good sir, is The Original and Only Genuine Bow Razor Manufactured Solely by Wade & Butcher

I suppose you could call me dprender, though around here I go by another name.
I'm glad she arrived safe and sound. I can chime in and answer another of your questions; namely about cleaning the blade. Since she's only stained, I would suggest starting off with a metal polish. MAAS seems to be a popular choice around here. In the event that metal polish doesn't do the trick, you could try some high grit sand paper or a wire brush/steel wool.
