A quick OT. About 16 years ago I purchased a very nice pair of pruning shears from Hida Tool and Hardware (see the above link). I still remember the owner sending me a personal note. It began, "Dear Bill-sama." Pretty cool.
I shaved with my Hayashi for the first time this morning and had a wonderful shave.
Definitely a fan of Japanese straights.
I am looking for information on Hasegwa razors ( lone Wolf) and Daishi razors , from the most popular 350 to the less expensive 800. Can someone help me out with some info.
Thanks,
h
There is no real secret to rentetsu. It's basically wrought iron. It has a fibrous character from the silicate stringers and when etched gives a wood grain looking pattern. It's perfect for traditional cutlery as the smith would not have historically wasted good steel for the whole blade. He would have welded a "tooth" onto the wrought iron body, giving a hard edge to a soft backing material.
A couple of us had the great fortune to work with Yataiki when he came to the US a long time ago. He was especially happy with us because we brought some old anchor chain that he thought was some very nice iron to work with. His lessons were invaluable.
Picked up this FON razor pretty cheap. It cleaned up real nice.
