I guess we all feel different about this. I've probably sold 300 things, and other than the back-end-couponers and the folks who just change their mind, I haven't had a problem. Personally, I'd rather those folks send me their stuff back than be forced into having no protection because they could say unreasonable things about me in return.

There is always the potential that someone could break something and send the broken item back to me, but I've never had it happen, and if it happened one in 500, I'd tolerate that as part of the process and just make sure to never sell to that buyer again.

I've never sent anyone paypal payment without getting buyer protection, either. If someone wants a gift payment, I tell them I'll cover the extra 3% or so. If they say no, then that's OK, maybe we'll do business some other time. In terms of filing claims, I have had to use ebay or paypal about a dozen times (in about 1000 transactions), mostly on sellers I don't know, but twice on trusted sellers on forums. I think it's a personal choice for people.

It costs me money to take payment as goods and services of course, but I like the idea that it provides the buyer with protection, just like I like to have it as a buyer. As a seller, I also have a very good record of the transaction with the address confirmed, etc, so there can't be any misunderstanding there or keypunch errors putting an address on a label.

(I think the claims process has probably saved me, over the years, about $1,500 in losses that I'd have taken with unresponsive sellers).
