I'm sorry if it seems like I am doubting nearly everything you say (Rocarule) but I have only ever dealt with hard facts and transparency, so I find it hard to deal with cryptic, undisclosed information. In the above thread Luigi claims that the reason for not revealing his friend's identity is something to do with the razor being unregistered or unpatented or something of that sort, which seems a little odd to me. I know that getting a patent can be pricey, but the unitary EU patents have slashed the price considerably, and for much of the timeframe we are talking about they were all but abolished in Italy, anyway (changed in Jan 2007 I believe).

So, in the absence of any concrete information I must remain sceptical about the origin of the Gladiator Razor.

    Regards,

no worries no reason to believe anything i said, after all i am not a a merchant, i don't sell the razor, nor i am trying to persuade anybody from buying anything. I was courious to see if anybody else had any experience with the razor ( first hand) and i anybody knew the origins of the razor. if you noticed i was the one pointing at the obvious wide bevel and thin spine, not because i am an expert but because my other razors that are 7/8 or larger have spines closer to 1/4" instead of a bit under 3/16. but i did shave with the razor and it was shave ready. here is a video but i must admit that it lacks quality.

Just to be perfectly clear, Rocarule, I am not directing my remarks specifically at you - you have been good enough to share your knowledge and even make a video for us. But - you can only repeat what you have been able to ascertain about the origin of the razor, and it is this lack of information from the designer/seller that I am unhappy with.

With that in mind I refer others to the thread on Afeitadovintage, in particular pages 5 and 6, where member Pink_Floydd expresses much the same view as many of us here. Google Translate helps - in a comical fashion! - if you don't speak the lingo.

I did notice that you remarked on the thinnness of the spine. In this instance I was thinking more of Sterm's comment that the blanks most likely came from a knife-making supplies outlet.

I hope that clarifies things a little, my friend.

    Regards,
    Neil

Yes I do speak Spanish, in fact that is my native language and it has become gnarly there.

Google translation of the Spanish forum thread was how you say "entertaining" if nothing else. The photos of the razor being discussed, especially the head on toe shot which clearly shows a problem with the way the razor was ground. I am no expert mind you but it is clear to me. If you add to that a spine the is too narrow for the blade size you will get a very wonky looking bevel from the little that I know. That is not to say it won't take an edge and shave but it is not within normal specs for geometry. OTH what do you want for that price range?

You can get a vintage razor for half that money and shave with it very comfortably for the rest of your life. Without any issues like edge holding and weird looking bevel and questionable geometry.

I found on an Italian shaving forum a thread partially devoted to that same razor with some more photos and comments very similar to what we had here.

You need to look carefully because that thread deals with two different razors, the other being from an italian (?) knife maker located in Sardegna

Fully agreed, I should have put new for that price range.

I have 2 of his razors. (1 Gladiator and 1 at 5/8)They were both shave ready when I received them. Lasted about 4 shaves. I re-honed no tape, didn't like it. 1 layer acceptable. 2 layers very good. I'm happy at 2 layers, haven't tried any more. Good bang for the buck.
