    Default Lather Burn?

Today I finally tried applying a hot towel, and, since I had the damp towel handy during the shave, I also tried wiping the blade instead of rinsing it. After I was done I noticed this strange discoloration on the blade. Is this "lather burn?" Something worse? Can I/how do I get rid of it? How do I prevent it? I know the pics are pretty bad; in case you can't tell, the discoloration is mostly grey with a little brownish.

This may be a stupid question, but what sort of metal polish? Where would I get it?

A lot of users us MAAS, I never have. I have used some polish I picked up at auto parts store for mag wheels. It works well. If there are any etchings or plating on the blade for decorations the polish may take it off. I couldn't tell from your pictures but it doesn't look like you have any. Just have to make sure the blade is dry after shaving, with a dry towel. I also use Vaseline on the blade after I dry to help prevent rust.

You are correct- there are no etchings or decorations on the blade. I was wondering if wheel polish would work; I think I'll pick some up and try it (coincidentally, my wheels could use some polishing too ). Thanks!

Just be real careful, don't want to lose any digits while doing it.

Ohhhh Gawd!! This sounds hauntingly very familiar...be very careful what you're about to do....one member remarked that I engaged in chemical warfare on my DOVO 5/8th...which had to be sent out to be virtually restored.

Here's the thread detailing my, "blade stain" disaster. Read carefully and avoid making the mistakes I did!

I believe that I read this thread a while ago, but thanks for reminding me of it. Have you gotten your Dovo back? How did it turn out? Any further advice after the repair/resto?

Hey - Phil @ Classic Edge called me and told me he had to do a full restore of the blade...that was a month ago...still waiting for it!! He said it was far more than a simple polish and re-honing so he wouldn't charge me any more than the $7 but it would take time.

Since now I keep my Holeka Solingen as dry as possible, wipe on towel, one hot water rinse, thorough dry, let breathe in the open air....I've since had no problems.

    Good luck!

May I ask what cream or soap did you use? It can be it contains some acid substances which reacted with the steel of the blade. Another question: what straight razor is it? Vintage? Carbon steel? Brand new?
