Thanked: 0Razor life expectancy?
Hi, I'm new to straight razor shaving and am considering buying my first razor quite soon. What I wanted to know is that if I were to buy a decent straight razor and maintenance tools would that same razor last me a lifetime?
Also, would the same set of stones and strop last me a lifetme assuming they were at least decent quality?

Welcome to SRP!
Yes, and you could pass it on to your son and he could pass it on to his son. A strop may not last as many generations as it is flexible leather and used a lot, but a razor and hones definitely will. There are quite a few early-1800s around that are used today!
It is important that you buy a shave-ready razor as your first. Take a look at the classifieds here or at a reputable vendor, such as StraightRazorDesigns, Whipped Dog, The Classic Edge and what have you. If you've picked one and are unsure whether it will do the job, do not hesitate to ask! There are unfortunately many fake razors (sometimes called razor-shaped objects) around, which can make it tricky for new people to purchase the right product.I want a lather whip

Welcome to SRP. As shown by the volume of vintage straights available on ebay and in our classifieds, a well taken care of, properly honed, razor will last a few lifetimes. For an average end user, not a pro honer, stones will also last a couple of lifetimes.
If you haven't already done so, check out the SRP beginner's guide here .

Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the voyage to shaving nirvana. There are some variables to keep in mind, though, when trying to figure out how long a razor might last. It might last for generations or it might last until you knock it on the faucet. You're grandson might shave with it, or you might just drop it on the floor. It might go on a human migration to outer space, or an inexperienced honer might f-up the spine and spoil a once-perfect tool. Your razor might be a treasured keepsake, or your spouse might see your first major gash and suggest that you or your crazy straight razor should go away.
All of the above have happened to me, hopefully you both luckier and smarter than I am -- doesn't take much -- so give it a go, proceed with care, and have some fun with it.

cared for well, longer than yours....like most quality tools. Not being flip, but I'm 65 and I have my father's wood plane and hand saw and both will outlive me, as will my razors outlive me!

Straight razors are only good for one shave...only!
Lol on a serious note, my oldest vintage blade is close to 150 years old and shaves AMAZING.
