Default Ever see a spine like this?

Someone showed me this Torrey with an odd shaped spine. I have a 992 almost identical to it except the spine on mine is a lot closer to perfect and it honed very well. Question, do you think this blade would hone up well or will the bevel be too far off center to be a good edge?

The issue is that it appears the distance from shoulder to edge is not symmetrical, and so on the side that is "longer" you'll get a flatter angle and hence a slightly wider bevel on that side.

However, there's absolutely no rule that says that the bevel angle must be bisected equally on each side for a razor to get sharp - symmetry is more an aesthetic thing, within reason of course. What matters is that both sides of the bevel can be made close enough to each other, and that once this is achieved the edge holds.

I think that razor will hone up just fine as is. You could always try "padding" the longer side with some tape if non-symmetric bevels bother you, but I'd give it a go normally first.

I have Japanese that is flat on one side and beveled on the other. Works for them. +1 to what Jimbo said.

Update on the off set Torrey 992 - I ended up having the razor given to me for next to nothing after a bit of clean up and honing she is definitely a good razor. My blade angle needs to be just a touch different between sides but she does produce as good of a shave as my other 992.

I've got a 992 and just went and checked, symmetrical spine/bevel. Mighty good shaver but mine was bear to hone. Must have some hard steel in mine.

    Really an interesting thread.
Thanks to all above me (#9-#1) on a great question and thoughtful answers.
My original thought was that there was no way the blade could be honed...after reading the answers; equally bisected bevel angles being simply an aesthetic concept; the fact that Japanese SR have a straight side, and the very blunt, ain't nuthin wrong...I realized just how much I have to learn.
    This site is really awesome!!!
