Thanked: 0Tested XX (Case??) with Leather Covered tang?
Hi all. First post for me. I have a few straights and am curious about one in particular. I think it is a Case based on what I have learned on this forum because of the lack of markings except for the etched TestedXX on the blade. There may be more markings but they may be hidden by what appears to be a leather covered tang which I have never seen before. I have posted a pic. Can anyone tell me anything about what I see as a very unique straight razor?
Thanks for your input

Thanked: 1184I don't think there is going to be anything under the leather. Most times the markings were on the original cover and they disappear rather quickly over time. Search covered tangs and you will find a ton of links from this forum. If someone has a razor in great condition you may have a definite maybe I.D. but in the end these were made by a few for so many it really could be anything.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Welcome to SRP. Case Bros in Little Valley and in Springville used to put XX on their blades. Sometimes on the belly/spine area or on the reverse tang. Most any maker that covered the tang would impress their logo into the covering. Are you sure it is leather ? Seems unlikely to me because of the water issue. Could it be a bakelite or something similar ? I've never seen one with the 'tested XX' in script like that before, but that doesn't mean it is not a Case. I know of no other maker who used the tested XX marque but I do have a C-Mon Solingen made that is marked Super XX.
I imagine they didn't make too many of those before Case would have gotten them to cease and desist for trademark infringement. That was years after the Case Bros, which by the way was a separate and distinct company from the W.R. Case & Sons we know and love. In the family but they finally went under and sold the "Tested XX" trademark to their kinsmen in Bradford, PA.
