Default My oldest razor is becoming a smooth shaver! :)

My oldest razor by far (I don't have a huge collection though). This pre-1891 razor with horn scales is finally turning into a very smooth shaver.

Even after sending it to SRDesigns, it wasn't quite good enough for my sensitive face. However, they did manage to make the edge evenly sharp along the "smile" which was a huge help. After that, I have periodically been stropping it on my slurried strop, my canvas strop, and pure leather. I kept doing this, as I noticed that it got better and smoother every time.

Shaved with it this morning, and it was very smooth (and very silent, due to the heavy blade). My wife complimented me on my baby-butt face

Glad to hear such a fine old girl is being put to good use. Goes to show that some things get better with age
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Nice looking razor. Those Frederick Reynolds are some fine shavers. I have a few and enjoy every one of them.

I have heard and experienced FRs being a bit hard to sharpen which stands to reason that a lot of stropping would help smooth the edge. I have a couple of blades (not FRs) that I have honed lately that are fine shavers but are leaving my face a bit irritated. Maybe they too need a little extra stropping...............

Yes, I am no expert, but if the blade seems to be sharp but a bit rough on the skin, then I think a lot of stropping on fabric and leather will eventually give it an edge that is smooth enough for your skin (if the steel quality is good that is).

I am also starting to enjoy the way the shape of this blade handles tricky areas of my face.

    Thanks folks!

Yeah, baby butt face. Referring, presumably, to the smoothness, not the smell
