Most antiques are put on a shelf and observed. if they are used it's very limited and a simple cleaning is all that's needed. Razors are different if you use them. Most wouldn't want to use something that is rusty and has mouse eaten scales. No different than antique cars. Most have newly manufactured parts and though they may look original they are not.

I'm all for customizing the vintage razors to be sleek and modern. I also love the vintage look. For me, it will probably come down to how much I like a specific razor's vintage look. My Ern is a great razor but honestly kind of "meh" looking. Add in that the scales are warped and I certainly would have no qualms seeing it in new duds.
My Dubl Duck is pretty vintage I guess but honestly, clear acrylic scales don't say "vintage" to me, they say bell-bottoms and leisure suits.
If I had the skills, both would get new clothes.
But it's hardly a firm taste for me; I've seen many pictures here of old-looking old razors that totally give me the RADs (too bad -- or maybe it's "luckily", I don't know -- those are owned by other people!)

Fewer razors will be molested as the rarity and prices go up. It's one thing to rebuild a $20 razor, a whole nother thing to tear up a $150 razor.
I suspect original boxes will also gain importance as collectors take over. One time, in band camp, I shaved with a Gold Dollar razor.

No one suggested rust and mouse eaten scales as the goal. I am for honoring the history and 300 plus year old tradition of the straight razor. We are all about individual rights, you might want pink scales with multi colored sparkles on your 9/8 Joseph Rogers, the conversation is not about your right to express yourself. I politely disagree, razors are not different, they can be functional antiques and homes are filled with them.

I believe there are many straight razor users for whom history is irrelevant, what counts is cool. Cool has a short shelf life.
