The grab bag of razors came today
I pitched the injectors into the "resell" box.
Then I was delighted to find three easy fixer uppers:
First is "Black Steel" etched onto blade, Windsor Cutlery Co. on tang, "GERMANY" on reverse of tang. May have been re-scaled or re-pivoted. Huge pivot washers and i can see a bit of hole at edge of washer.
Next is F.W.Engels "Leader" (twin razor is posted here). Super nice, small-but nice. Going to be my prettiest one.
Last (the one i was "after") is a Maher & Grosh Toledo "Sheffield Diamond Edge" with no markings on tang. 7/8, notched, near wedge-I'm guessing. It's a battle axe next to the rest for sure. AND get this, appears that the price is etched into the blade as well. That sure does look like "$1" right behind the notch--where the scales tend to rub a blade. Or i'm just seeing things. I better get a drink. see more things.
Friday night polish and honing session starts in a few hours!!!
I'm confused about "Sheffield Diamond Edge" and no tang marking-is it English or Yankee steel?

Thanked: 1184Yep it says a buck. But heck I'll give ya 2 for it because I am feeling generous. :<0) With inflation that's probably around 400.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

after initial cleanup, i see that it's indeed marked $1 on both ends of the blade. The old-fashioned U S type mark. Perusing 1937 Maher catalog, i see most (of their) razors were 2 or 3 bucks at that time. Does that make this one OLDer or just CHEAPer?
Feels like a hatchet...i think i'm going to like it a lot.

frikkity frak I just busted a scale on the FWE.
NOW i see how a middle pin could be useful. Looks like a job for superglue. Doing stuff learns you things.Last edited by WadePatton; 12-14-2013 at 01:24 AM.

i'm jealous of that Leader... I've been waiting to find an F.W.E. in user condition for a "decent price".

actually I tried to try, back when i was DE'ing it, but the blade housing/holder thingy was cracked and wouldn't hold the blade properly.
I'll make you a deal on a "Lady" and an Adjustible, plus the cracked one...
Report 2:
If you didn't see my edit above, I cracked the Leader scales, right through where a third pin/post would be. SO that may be how I repair 'em, glue and a spacer-no pin.
I started honing. The Black Steel has a nick dead center, of about 1/2 a bevel. Even and clean otherwise. The fatboy (old skool) is beginning to clean up nicely, still some evening out yet.

Shave report: The 2-dolla razor (not unlike a 3-dolla shake [que Jackrabbit Slim's scene]), and i'm calling it "2-dolla" because it's marked "$1" _twice_, may become a favorite. Took quite a bit of work to get the bevel proper, I used 2 pieces of tape. There's not that much spine wear, but it is a wedge/near wedge. It's not triangular, but there's no skinny section of blade.
My previous best shaver was a 1/2 hollow (the heaviest i had). SO I'm liking this even more. Had more audible feedback than I expected.
I finished it on a coticule, then CrOx, canvas (no idea the actual composition), leather.
No irritation, no nicks, no probs. I reckon i should stop buying razors now.
Will rescale, in osage likely. Those stink.

That Mayher and Grosh is a fine blade. I would think the original scales would pop and look best if rubbed good and oiled? It's yours, but if it were mine, I would at least save the scales and collars if I rescaled it. Might want that original someday.....
"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
